I became more and more fed up with my Sony Alpha system recently and hardly took any photos anymore. Sony has great sensors and is the king of making bodies as small as possible, but their lens setup really sucks and I don't like the user interface anymore.

I've now bought into the Fuji X system and I LOVE it.

The lenses are phenomenal. The bodies are beautiful and the quite efficient user interface is geared towards photographers who want to go beyond point&shoot. The electronic viewfinder of the body (X-T1) is the best I've ever seen anywhere.

I can't wait to get out and take photos!

Personally, I'd like to see facts, not opinions.

Dang, I've heard those German folks make really good cameras. Should give them a try sometime.

I have heard the same thing. Probably just some guy's opinion.

Of the German camera makers, only Leica is left (and Zeiss, but they only make lenses).

Unfortunately, Leica has IMO evolved into a silly luxury brand which mainly lives off its former glory.

Zeiss makes some good glass, but they lag behind in electronics (focussing, image stabilizatino etc.).

Klaus I was in four camera shops today and liked the fujifilm system a lot. I quite understand why. The lenses are metal...when did Nikon last make a metal lens...also they get terrific reviews. Not overly expensive. Downsides for me are mainly twofold...not a full 35mm size sensor, and digital. Also query their resale value.

Incidentally my Nikon went in the bin last week...still have two lenses but no real loyalty to the system. I do however fancy the 24mm shift with a 610.
Sooooo
I also looked at leica ...goodness how I'd like an M9 (p-240) with a 35mm f 1.4 asph summilux . £8k.

Really liked the Sony rx1, get a proper size sensor, lovely quality feel to it and a discrete machine. Not exactly pocket size; fixed lens. It gets rave reviews. I want it but the price is crazy and again, I query the resale value.

More realistic for street candids is the Ricoh GXR which I thought was truly small enough to take everywhere.

And then there is what I definitely intend buying (again). Mamiya 7(2) with most if not all of the six lenses. Only available secondhand...I want film again, I want quality photos, I want to compose rather than snap 30. The 43mm on 6x7 equates to 21mm in small format so could correct verticals and crop.

So Mamiya 7 system for serious stuff with.... Sony RX1 for digital snaps?

Why do you want a 35mm sensor? If you want smaller depth of field you can choose faster glass instead. The 55mm f/1.2 lens is fantastic, for instance. Other reasons for 35mm would be better high iso capabilities and more pixels. The Fujis happen to be quite good at high iso, so in that regard the difference is not so significant (unless you choose a high iso monster like the Sony A7S). I think the main reason for 35mm sensors these days is if you want 30+ megapixels. Or if you have old lenses that you want to continue using without "wasting" parts of the lens.

Resale value for digital bodies is always going down, of course. I'd guess the value drops by 50% after 3 years or so. Resale values for lenses are much better, though - and usually most of the money goes into the glass and not into the body.

You mean you have a 24mm tilt/shift lens? Cool! I've never had one of those. The shifting can also be simulated well enough by postprocessing, but tilting is quite exciting.

I was also considering Leica for some time, but while they used to have a niche in which they were king, I can't see many reasons (apart from nostalgia) to buy a Leica anymore.

I think used ones can be bought for not much more than 1,200 Euro. I do have a similar camera which I prefer, namely a Fuji X100S. Very similar concept (same equivalent focal length, same lens speed etc.). But I like the user interface better. And it is more pocketable than the RX1.

Medium format, Very cool! Just for fun I bought an old analog SLR a while ago to shoot some film, but I must say that even disregarding all the other advantages of digital cameras I was rather disappointed by the image quality. For medium format this is maybe different. These cameras are the opposite of "pocket size", though.

I've considered a large format camera a few times (like what Ansel Adams used in his iconic pictures), but I don't think they have any technical advantages anymore these days (and apart from the fact that they weight a ton).

I can post links to Youtube videos which say that. That should be proof that convinces everyone, right? ;)

If you are seriously interested, I could elaborate on my opinion why their lens setup sucks :)

I have a Rolleiflex twin lens reflex that my father bought back in the late 50s if i remember correctly. I still have the original box it came in and some filters for it. It hasn't been used in 30 or more years. I should sell it one of these days before they stop making film 70mm film.

Not that one. I've got a twin lens reflex like the one that Vivian Maier used.

I have always felt digital photos I've taken lack "zing" which I put down to the small sensors. Contrast/depth/detail? I look at my old 6x7 trannies and get the wow feeling ; when they are right they are as good as anything out there.
I got the same feeling with photos from some of my Olympus lenses, especially the 24mm shift, the 50 f1.2, 100f2 and 180f2.8.

The results from the fujifilm x that I've seen looked truly excellent...Jessops had a sample book of images that honsetly gave me the zing.

This weekend a friend and I went out with twoF3's sharing four lenses 20 & 24 wide angles and 60/105 micro lenses. Great fun shooting film and neither of us finished a roll of 36!
Not got the Nikon 24shift; it, and the 200mm f2 are my Nikon lust list.

Disadvantage of the Mamiya 7 is the rangefinder viewfinder. Got used to it so will do again...but the OM4ti was the best handling camera ever for me. And that multi spot metering was just great..

What do you think of rangefinders?

What do you think of rangefinders?
The closest thing to a rangefinder I've ever used was an old Canon T90.

I love the design of some of the range finder cameras, and I love manual focus sometimes, but having only manual focus is rather limiting. It basically means that you cannot take pictures of things that move faster than a snail. Also, I'm not sure whether one can focus so accurately that it works with the shallow depth of field of fast lenses and 30+ megapixels.

Kluurs, thoses 6x6 rolleis took some of the greatest photos ever. You should use it, they are easy. What lens: 2.8 or 3.5?
There was a TLR that had interchangeable lenses too.

Zeiss and Meopta? Explain.

I know about Zeiss and Sony, but I haven't heard of this connection.

From what I know, the "main" Zeiss lenses are still manufactured by Zeiss itself.

They also make some very nice binoculars. I have a Zeiss 8x42.

Conquest. I don't use it enough to justify the expense for a Victory.

I used to be a Canon guy, but for what I want to do I think that mirror-less systems are better. Much more innovation in these systems. But of course there are still very good reasons for the mature Canon/Nikon systems, such as the huge selection of lenses.

Nikon, Canon, Sony(minolta)... the build quality and redundancy can be off-putting to this hobbyist. Wife has a Sony and I do not like it, not the plastic zoom, not the flimsy body, not the average results. The kind of camera to take on holiday and if it gets sand inside, replace it with not one iota of regret.

Leica on the other hand are built to last and do not depreciate.

The Mamiya 7 is smaller and lighter than a Nikon D3. The results trounce small format.
As pointed out, it lacks autofocus, but I don't do sports, nor can I afford the necessary huge, bright lenses used. Despite deteriorating eyesight, I learnt my skills, like pre-focus, before autofocus was included, so can manage.

A lot of modern wizz-bang technology is really excess to requirements. I need aperture markings on my lens. I like spot-metering.
