Mahler vs Beethoven?

Apparently, there is an orchestration of the Beethoven 9th symphony that Mahler did. I guess his thinking was that the orchestra was not as good, or powerful, as it could have been, to really do the 9th correctly. Mahler, being Mahler, reorchestrated it.

You may ask, "Why are you asking?"

Well, lemme tellya.

The Elgin Symphony is doing the Mahler orchestration of the LvB 9th later this year. Mrs. George has been asking if I want her to come to a concert with me and I thought this might be a fun concert.

So, any insights?

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

HOLY CARP!!!
Just listened to the Molto Vivace in the Mahler arrangement.

Maybe it is just because it is unusual, but I don't like it. The original orchestration makes the movement very airy and lightweight. The Mahler version sounds very thick in comparison.

But generally one can never go wrong with the 9th, I think, especially together with people who are not regular classical concertgoers.

That's sort of the point. The Mrs. is so ignorant naive about classical music that I doubt that she'd notice the difference, and she still might enjoy. She goes to the Chicago Symphony about twice a year with our neighbor whose daughter-in-law is a violinist (free tickets, you know).

Yes, exactly.

That movement is Beethoven's Mendelssohn moment. He turns it into a "Mahler 6th symphony" kind of sound :lol2:

As cover versions go, it's not bad.
