So, D4 and I are going to Washington this fall.

One of the docs I was working with this afternoon said that, if I have 3 ˝ days, I should see Mount Vernon.

My question is this: If I were to rent a car for a day (say, Sunday) and use it to see Mount Vernon, what else should I do that is accessible only by car? We plan to use public transportation for everything else, and we're staying at the Capital Hilton (about 2 blocks north of the White House - I'll wave to POTUS for you, Copper!).

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

HOLY CARP!!!
Too bad you won't have time to do the Yorktown-Jamestown-Williamsburg circle.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

If you're travelling out to the hinterlands and want a second destination, I'd strongly recommend the Udvar-Hazy Center, the companion facility to the Narional Air & Space Museum near Dulles airport.

Copper can tell you much more about it than I can, but my wife and I really enjoyed our visit there about a year and a half ago.

Thanks for the tip, Al. I might just be able to con D4 into the National Air & Space Museum, if we have a car.

I'll go to the NASM with you any time, it's just across the street from my house.

I'm a member so I can get you a discount at the gift shop if you want to buy some astronaut ice cream.

I'm always looking for an excuse to go there.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy
