Anyone ever stayed at the Ritz-Carlton on Canal St? We will be there in about 10 days. What should I expect? |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead

Bring lots and lots of cash. Have an empty tummy going in. Try to find some of the side street places around the quarter, but never go more than a block out of the quarter. Parts of it are a no-go zone, or at least it used to be. We used to go into one old blues bar that served up all you could eat beans and rice and french bread for 50 cents. It was great stuff. Granted, I have not been there in 40 years, but still... |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

I never had a problem using credit cards in New Orleans. |

I would say to NOT hang out too long in the quarter. It's fine during the day, but at night it's full of cheesy blues and drunk dudes, who will vomit all over your boobs. Seriously, find out where the locals eat, drink, and listen to music. The last time I was there the warehouse district, the garden district, and the Vietnamese area (can't remember the name) were interesting places to eat. The Waldorf has a restaurant, Domenica, that is awesome. |

I visit pretty infrequently, but I'll ask around for the latest. I do know that most folks who eat in New Orleans have a favorite place to eat, and there are lots of good places. Some places that are pretty good: 1. Cafe du Monde - you ain't been to New Orleans unless you have beignets and cafe au lait. Don't wear anything you don't want to drop powdered sugar on. 2. Central Grocery - best muffaletta in town. They say they invented it, I dunno, but they do a good job. 3. Acme Oyster House - yeah, I know it's a tourist trap, but their char-grilled oysters are as good as anybody's. 4. Place I haven't been, but would like to go - http://www.herbsaint.com/ Supposedly, the only restaurant to make The Times-Picayune top ten, every year. 5. Bring your wallet - Commander's Palace. http://www.commanderspalace.com/ 6. Best fried chicken - http://www.dookychaserestaurant.com/ 7. Oldest - http://www.antoines.com/ 175 years. Same family. Maybe not the best (but still good) in New Orleans, but you have to be doing something right to stay in business that long. 8. Where it started - Ruth's Chris. Good steaks, but I don't know if they are any better than any of the rest of the chain. 9. Lunch - Dookie's is good, but I've always liked the barbequed shrimp sandwich down at Pascal's Manale. Another place that's been in business forever. http://pascalsmanale.com/ 10. It's been a while - but they used to do a good remoulade and their grilled fish was good - http://www.galatoires.com/home Lastly, ask around. Lots of places to find a good poboy, whether you like a sloppy roast beef or a fried oyster. And don't forget, crawfish are in season (although a little early)...find a good place for boiled crawfish and give 'em a try. A tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EndhxlX7Df8 Lastly, if you do try boiled crawfish, don't eat one where the tail is straight out, with no curl. That crawfish was dead before he hit the water and he's no good. |

Nah, they take credit cards but there'll be lots of tipping at the Ritz. |

A friend who grew up in NOLA recommends the Carousel Bar, in Monteleone Hotel, at 5 pm on Fridays. And I will second Jolly's suggestion on Pascal's Manale. I LOVE that BBQ shrimp. |

As for stuff to do, there's always the music and the WWII museum. The museum is well worth seeing. I haven't been to any of the Stage Canteen shows, but I've heard they are pretty decent. http://www.nationalww2museum.org/ But don't forget the Saenger...I haven't seen the inside, but they did a full renovation after Katrina and they say it's very nice. http://www.saengernola.com/calendar Since the Saenger opened back up, Mahalia Jackson is not as busy, but they still have some events: http://www.mahaliajacksontheater.com/events/1425186000 |
