Died last Saturday. He could play trumpet upside down with the backs of the fingers of either hand...got half a page obit in The Guardian today.

Great musician
Every morning the soul is once again as good as new, and again one offers it to one's brothers & sisters in life.

RIP.

94 is a really, really good age for a jazz musician, not the most long-lived of creatures at the best of times - this guy predates bebop!

I heard him a few years ago at a Manchester Craftsmen's Guild concert here in Pittsburgh. He had someone assist him onto the stage where he used a stool for support, but when he put that trumpet to his lips, he blew the hell out of it. I'm sorry I won't be seeing him again. I'll be hearing him, but it won't be live anymore.

You can really hear his influence in Wynton Marsalis' playing, but I think he also influenced Miles Davis a lot. He has that soft sound, unlike the more fiery Roy Eldridge/Dizzy Gillespie sound that most trumpeters in the 50's copied until Miles' became dominant.
