The US should use the Ukraine crisis; and threaten to leave us unprotected

The US has demanded for a long time that European countries should spend more for their military.

If they want to force that, now would be the opportunity.

If they'd make a credible threat that they will not help if the Russians come, we'd $hit in our pants and rebuild our armies.

(And if the Russians do come, it would be awfully nice if you'd help us anyway)

Our military is in a miserable state, and nobody dares to demand more budget.

What's wrong with European countries that are strong enough to defend their borders without help from America?

The Russians are not a threat; and yes the US will go in if it considers its vital interests are under threat of attack regardless of European military capabilities other than Britain's and France's.

The Ukraine situation does not and nor will it likely constitute such a threat to US vital inetests in Europe so long as Putin is president.

Well, many of the former Warsaw pact countries feel very much threated by Russia right now, particularly the Baltic states.

What happens if Russian subcommunities in these states will do the same things that those in the Ukraine did?

It is not an entirely unrealistic scenario that Russia will support such insurgencies with weapons with the ultimate goal of extending its borders.

Yes, but Renauda might very well approve of Russian reintegration of much of the former empire.

The sad state of the Bundeswehr?

Broomsticks

The UK and France are the only European "powers" with any remotely credible ability to project military power. And the more the US shifts eastward in basing the less we need to think about NATO beyond trilateral meetings with the UK and France. For long term projects (i.e. Afghanistan), NATO offered some financial cushion and international legitimacy. But as a military matter, foreign "troops" in Afghanistan largely meant US and UK forces all along.

French oil reserves are not even a tenth of a percent of Saudi Arabia's.

Or Iran or Iraq or Kuwait or UAE.

France can get in line.

That's correct. Certainly Ukraine, Belorus and northern Kazakhstan. Not the Baltics.

There is no doubt German equipment is second to none. Their machine guns, rifles and pistols are first rate. Their tank is a world leader. Their self-propelled artillery is world class. They have a new armored troop carrier.

The Europeans have decent shared aviation assets, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon.

So...The equipment is there, or at least it could be.

Why not the personnel?

The technology is not the problem.

We know how to make good weapons.

One problem is that we don't spend enough for the military.

The more important problem, however, is the majority mindset that we don't need a strong military and that those who join the military are looser. I'm sometimes annoyed by the US "we must support our troops" "every dead soldier is a hero" etc. kind of mentality, but we have the exact opposite and the truth is that we'd need at least some kind of public support. When our soldiers are told to go somewhere where there is actual danger, they suddenly find out that their conscience does not allow them to be soldiers anymore. I'm exaggerating a little, but it is somewhat pathetic.

That's pretty common.

Except when they are needed.

Arguably, who were the best Axis combat troops of WWII?

The SS.

Is there some way to use the espirit de corps and the elan of the SS, without having to use all the bad parts?

Speaking of which, Mrs. George decided she'd sleep in the spare bedroom around midnight last night (her neck was bothering her and she didn't want to disturb me). At 5 AM, the dog decided that he was thirsty, so I got up and opened the door for him. I shut the door and went back to bed.

COuldn't get back to sleep, and I was reading a book, when I realized that the cat, who was sleeping in her bed on the chest at the foot of the bed, farted.

I mean, she REALLY FARTED. There were only two of us in the room, and I knew I wasn't the culprit.

Oh.
My.
God.

How pungent, how awful, how disgusting!

Oy!
