Temperament?

Can anyone recommend a good book that explains various temperaments? Discussion with a friend tonight about why music written in Eb (back in the day) was different from music written in D. I tried to explain how, back in the day, intervals were just so slightly different. And so Eb was the "heroic" key, etc. I told him about how, today, the octave is divided into 12 equal parts, but it wasn't always so.

He asked for a book that explains it all.

Thoughts?

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I understand the mathematical necessity

What's hard for us to understand are the "colors" of the different keys because our ears simply don't hear them anymore.

That's what I was trying to explain to him last night. We have grown so accustomed to hearing 12 (more or less) equal tones in an octave that we don't hear the subtleties.

Had my piano tuned yesterday, and it was tuned to a non-equal temperament - I don't remember the name - and I really have a hard time hearing a difference. It does, at times, sound a bit "edgier" with older music, but with anything post mid-19th century, nah, all the same.

Oh, thanks Jon - I ordered it.

Saxophone players tend to ignore all that nonsense. I tried playing with an electronic tuner the other day - God, it was embarrassing

I'm pretty sure it's faulty. Either that or my mouthpiece is to blame. Or maybe the reed. Or I could need a new sax. Or maybe it's the cold weather.

Only if it had followed you around from England.

Blame Bach for that.

Blame Bach for that.
In our conversation last night, I did just that.
