Phi Psi Fraternity speaks about the Rolling Stone Story:

Quote:

The University of Virginia students read the Rolling Stone article that November night in complete surprise. A U-Va. junior said she attended a date party at the fraternity house in 2012 and was lured to a bedroom, where a group of men raped her in what appeared to be a gruesome initiation rite. The students were disgusted, emotional and confused.

“Some people actually had to leave the room while they were reading it because they were so upset,” said Phi Psi President Stephen Scipione, 21, a junior from Richmond.

But within 24 hours of the article’s publication, the U-Va. students reviewed the fraternity’s records and confirmed their initial suspicions: The magazine’s account was deeply flawed.

“We knew that the Rolling Stone story was not true,” said David Fontenot, 22, a senior from McLean, Va. But they also knew “that we would only make things more difficult by fighting it in the media and that our best move was to stay quiet, let the police do their jobs and ride it out until the time was appropriate.”

Phi Psi members, speaking publicly for the first time since the allegations surfaced, told The Washington Post that they went into hiding for weeks after their home was vandalized with spray-painted messages calling them rapists and with bricks thrown through windows. They booked hotel rooms to avoid the swarm of protesters on their front lawn. They watched as their brotherhood was vilified, coming to symbolize the worst episode of collegiate sexual violence against women since the 2006 Duke University lacrosse team scandal — which also turned out to be false.
...
After reading the article, Phi Psi leaders scanned archived e-mails and checked bank statements, determining that the fraternity did not host a party on the weekend of Sept. 28, 2012, the time of the alleged attack. They also determined that no Phi Psi members matched the article’s description of the attackers, calling into question one of the main elements of the account.
...
Sullivan said last week that she would immediately lift the ban if fraternities signed a new contract with the school that is designed to discourage binge drinking and enhance safety measures at large parties.

Two fraternities — Alpha Tau Omega and Kappa Alpha — said Wednesday they would not sign the contract, arguing that their policies are more stringent than what the university outlined and assailing the decision to suspend the houses.

“At the end of the day, every fraternity and sorority student at U-Va. was punished with a suspension for doing nothing wrong,” said Kevin O’Neill, an attorney for the two fraternities. “The discussion over the need to sign a new [contract] is a process created to distract from the university’s bad decision in suspending our organizations last fall.”

U. Va. President admits rape story was false, but keeps restrictions on fraternities:

Quote:

University of Virginia president Teresa Sullivan finally admitted that she knows the Rolling Stone article detailing a brutal gang rape at the university was discredited.

“Before the Rolling Stone story was discredited, it seemed to resonate with some people simply because it confirmed their darkest suspicions about universities — that administrations are corrupt; that today’s students are reckless and irresponsible; that fraternities are hot-beds of deviant behavior,” Sullivan said during a presidential address.

Of course, Sullivan fell for the story hook, line and sinker as well. But it is her next sentence that really shows how out of touch she is.

“Working together, we have soundly refuted those suspicions through our actions over the past two months,” Sullivan said.

But have they?

Immediately following the Rolling Stone story, Sullivan extended the Greek council’s voluntary weekend ban (calling it a “pause”) on social activities through Jan. 9. And in order for Greek organizations to resume activities, they had to sign new agreements with the university that put new restrictions on their social activities.

Remember, these actions were spurred by a Rolling Stone article that has since been discredited.

The new restrictions on fraternities contradict what Sullivan said. They show that the university doesn’t trust Greek organizations, thinking they are “hot-beds of deviant behavior” with members that are “reckless and irresponsible” that need new rules that are more restrictive to save them from themselves. (Example: “Beer may be served, unopened in its original can.”)

The fraternities and sororities have been forced to adopt the new guidelines for fear of having university ties cut. They will never get an apology from Sullivan, that much is clear. But it would have at least been nice if she were straight with the students and told them that she is still acting on the “darkest suspicions” fueled by a false story about a rape.

Sorority Sisters ordered to stay home Sat Night for their own safety - while frats party.

"Ordered?"

Quote:

Sorority sisters at the University of Virginia were ordered by their national chapters to avoid fraternity events this weekend — a mandate that many of the women said was irrational, sexist and contrary to the school’s culture.

It’s not about one night of parties, several students said, but about their ability to make their own choices.

And they’re not taking that lightly.

The rule came after a traumatic fall semester in Charlottesville, including the violent death of a student and now-discredited allegations of a gang rape at a U-Va. fraternity. Both forced a thorough examination of campus safety, drinking culture and Greek life.

The university administration just days ago lifted a suspension of fraternity and sorority activities that came in the wake of the sexual assault allegations, a break that the university community used to have a broad discussion about student safety in the Greek system. In order to have the ban lifted — immediately ahead of spring rush, when students join fraternities — the school’s Greek houses agreed to new rules amid new student-led initiatives to increase safety.

Many students had been looking forward to celebrating with old friends and new members during the fraternities’ bid night, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31.

There are 16 sororities on U-Va.’s campus that are part of the National Panhellenic Conference, with more than 2,000 members, according to the campus Inter-Sorority Council. The NPC can come to “unanimous agreements” among its national presidents that are binding on local chapters and their members.

At some U-Va. chapters in recent days, students described mandatory emergency meetings with representatives from their national chapter telling them they risked suspension, fines and other penalties if any of them attended bid night parties. Boys’ Bid Night is typically a night when sorority sisters go from house to house sharing drinks with friends.

Now some sororities are planning mandatory in-house retreats that night, to avoid any risk of inadvertently violating the rule.

At some chapters, women were told not only to avoid going to fraternity parties on Boys’ Bid Night, but to avoid any social gathering with fraternity members, said Ben Gorman, president of the Inter-Fraternity Council at U-Va. That would mean a ban on attending off-campus parties or gatherings at bars that night after a hotly anticipated basketball game on campus, which pits the undefeated No. 2 Cavaliers against No. 4 Duke. “People are very agitated and very upset, and see this as an obstacle to larger cultural change a violation of free rights and student free will.”

Rolling Stone will pay $1.65 million to fraternity that sued for defamation

Rolling Stone is paying a University of Virginia fraternity $1.65 million to shut the door on its debunked story about campus rape.

UVA's Phi Kappa Psi chapter said on Tuesday that it will settle its defamation claim against the magazine. It's the final suit to come out of Rolling Stone's explosive 2014 story about a gang rape at a fraternity house, which was later discredited.

"It has been nearly three years since we and the entire University of Virginia community were shocked by the now infamous article, and we are pleased to be able to close the book on that trying ordeal and its aftermath," Brian Ellis, a spokesman for the chapter, said in a statement.

Ellis confirmed the settlement amount via email. The fraternity initially asked for $25 million in damages.

Rolling Stone did not respond to a request for comment via parent company Wenner Media.
The magazine also settled a defamation case brought by former UVA dean Nicole Eramo for an
undisclosed amount in April.

Eramo had argued that Rolling Stone and its author, Sabrina Rubin Erdely, portrayed her as callous and indifferent to the plight of the alleged sexual assault victim in the story, identified only as "Jackie."

She was awarded $3 million by a jury in November before Rolling Stone agreed to cut a deal.

A separate suit brought by individual members of Phi Kappa Psi was dismissed.

"A Rape on Campus" was a bombshell when it was first published in November 2014. But the story quickly fell apart under closer examination.

Charlottesville police said they couldn't find evidence to support Jackie's account of a rape and beating at the Phi Kappa Psi house. And Erdely never spoke to the men identified in the story as Jackie's attackers.

A review by the Columbia Journalism School said Rolling Stone failed to adhere to basic principles of journalism.

They're going to build a mighty fine frat house!

I'm surprised that they settled for that amount, however.

I would have much preferred Rolling Stone forced out of business after being required to pay a lot more!

Then, I'd like to have seen a picture of their "reporters" and editors walking down the street after the doors were closed and locked, pulling their wagon of BS behind them, wondering what they will do next.

The amount of the settlement struck me as small for an established national publication. But the more I thought about the constantly shrinking market trend of the print media, they may consider themselves lucky to collect that amount. Rolling Stone's glory days are gone, the magazine is a shell of its' former self.

Lawyers for “Jackie,” the woman who claimed to Rolling Stone that she had been gang-raped at a University of Virginia fraternity party, have finally acknowledged that their client created the fake rapist alleged to have orchestrated the attack.

Jackie’s lawyers, in new court documents filed Tuesday, acknowledged that they had accessed an email account connected to the fake rapist in mid-March. The email account for “Haven Monahan,” the name Jackie gave as her alleged rapist, had been created days after the alleged gang-rape had occurred and a day before the email account sent a love letter to a young man whom Jackie had a crush on.

Yeah, you are right.
When I was young, I hardly ever read it. But, I knew it was cool, one of the magazines that represented "the new generation."

My guess is that it has been bought and sold over the years, and now is simply a mouthpiece of somebody. Like pretty much all the print media that has survived this long, "a shell" as you put it.

Wait, Haven was a male rapist in one of her imaginary manifestations, and a female with a crush in another? Or a heterosexual male rapist in one, and a homosexual male with a crush in the other?

I'm so confused. Was Haven trans? If so, did the social backlash s/he had faced her/his whole imaginary life, force her/him to imaginarily rape Jackie?
