D4 started playing around with a ukulele last year. She's discovering the limitations of the instrument, and I suggested that a guitar might give her more flexibility, though it's more difficult to learn. Her birthday is coming up, and I don't want to spend a ton of money on an acoustic guitar. What do you recommend? |

Take a look at the Taylor GS Mini. It's a wonderful sounding little guitar and very easy to play. I play both uke and guitar and although the uke may seem a bit easier to play, there really is not much difference once you get basic strumming and rhythm down. |

Thanks, Mark. It looks like a nice instrument, but, considering she's never held a guitar, I think it's probably a bit over-priced for her needs (and my wallet). |

Not a guitar person here, but know someone who has this one and is very happy with it. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001R2O0BK/ref=psdc_11971261_t3_B003P2V9OG |

If she's been playing a ukelele you might want to get a classical guitar first, simply because the nylon strings will be easier on her fingers. But here's two options: Steel string acoustic: Epiphone DR-100 On sale right now at Musician's Friend for 99 bucks (about half price) http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/epiphone-dr-100-acoustic-guitar Nylon string classical: Lucero LC100 Classical guitar On sale right now at Musician's Friend for 130 bucks (about half price) http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/lucero-lc100-classical-guitar Get a case for it, and a few packs of quality strings. The strings that come on them from the factory suck. |

I think she'd be interested in a steel-string. She has very small hands, and the width of the fretboard on a nylon-stringed classical might be an issue for her. Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Birthday is in February, so I'll probably pester you guys again before then. |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
You need to fid something with a light action, as she may get discouraged until her fingers get strong...that takes considerable time. I would focus more on action than tone. Most of the hundred buck steel strings will be pretty tough for a beginner, so I think you will have to look around a bit. The baby Taylors are very popular, I think maybe $400? |

Baby Taylors can be had around $300. You might look into the new steel/silk hybrid strings. |

ZOOOOOM!

IMNSHO, about 250-300 is about the price I'd be willing to start with. Any less and the thing either has crappy action, it goes out of tune all the time or worse. And I agree about going steel-string. |

It all depends on what you want to spend. Absolute bottom: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/yamaha-fg700s-folk-acoustic-guitar?skuId=site1sku518274000010000 Moving up the Seagull Entourage: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Seagull-S6-Entourage-Acoustic-Guitar-104990767-i1171384.gc The best buy in America, IF you buy from a decent shop ( they have a few QC issues): http://elderly.com/new_instruments/names/recording-king-rd-10-dreadnought-classic-series--RD10.htm Another solid body guitar, that won't be outgrown: http://www.maurysmusic.com/inc/sdetail/blueridge_br_140/35915/35952 My daughter started on a Yamaha. When she progressed enough to warrant a decent guitar we looked real hard at a Taylor 110E, but it ultimately came down to this guitar: http://www.maurysmusic.com/inc/sdetail/martin_drs2/84261/115692 I found one for at a great price and never looked back. As for any guitar you buy, buy from a shop that will have a luthier go through the guitar and check for little problems. have him lower the action for a beginner and put on a set of Elixirs. Just ask about what gauge he thinks would be best for a beginner and what would sound best on the guitar. |
