Over on We Trump Freedom.....

as an example of the mental illness that is today's liberalism....

one of the leftwing geniuses posted this photo:

Posted Image

And this is as far as the liberal mind is capable of going.. One even said "Ayn Rand, may you rot in hell."

Now let's look at what Rand actually said. You know, the part that a liberal just doesn't want to have to deal with:

"The person who loves everybody and feels at home everywhere is the true hater of mankind. He expects nothing of men, so no form of depravity can outrage him."

"You mean the person who says that there's some good in the worst of us?"

"I mean the person who has the filthy insolence to claim that he loves equally the man who made that statue of you and the man who makes a Mickey Mouse balloon to sell on street corners. I mean the person who loves the men who prefer the Mickey Mouse to your statue-and there are many of that kind. I mean the person who loves Joan of Arc and the salesgirls in dress shops on Broadway-with equal fervor. I mean the person who loves your beauty and the women he sees in a subway-the kind that can't cross their knees and show flesh hanging publicly over their garters-with the same sense of exaltation. I mean the person who loves the clean, steady, unfrightened eyes of man looking through a telescope and the white stare of an imbecile-equally."

A liberal is incapable of comprehending this message, therefore they only quote the first line because it fits into one of the cheese holes in their brain.

Does anybody actually read Ayn Rand? Her book Atlas Shrugged is 'best book ever' on at least one list I've seen, but I don't think I've ever met somebody who's actually read her stuff. I gave it a go on my Kindle, but gave up. Her prose gave turgid a bad name.

I wasn't shooting anybody, it was a genuine question. Do you know anybody that reads Ayn Rand for pleasure?

As far as the topic goes, if we're going to start commenting on superficial crap on the internet, particularly featuring pictures of cats, we'll be here all day. It's not just liberals that do this stuff, it's everywhere.

Yup, some of us do. I read both Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead every five years or so. But then again, I also read Napolian Hill on a regular basis :)

Speaking of needing to get getting laid, Larry, Ayn Rand was in seriously dire need.

I don't know about her sexual needs. I just know that if one is going to quote her, they need to be able to think.

And yet the one whose birth we celebrate tonight, God-in-the-flesh come into the world to show us firsthand the real Truth, taught us to love all of those people in precisely the same measure that Rand describes and heaps scorn upon. As an adult, this same one unwaveringly taught this lesson of equal, unconditional love of all, statue-carver and balloon-maker alike, ultimately to the point of showing that both were even of equal worth and merit to die for. And this same one then commissioned all those who would claim to be his followers to offer the same kind of equal, unconditional love and with equal fervor; and to do it in his name and in the name of pleasing God. Loving all equally is what pleases God, he taught, because this is the way God loves all of us. This is the good news that God brought into the world through the birth of this one, this night.

Merry Christmas.

To answer the original question, if you take the quote in its entirety Ayn Rand sounds like a bloody awful snob. The fact that the quote is misunderstood is of course a problem. However, this doesn't mean the full thing is particularly laudable.

No, she sounds like someone who understands the difference between sh!t and shinola.

Rand wasn't speaking about a spiritual "equality". She was talking about something entirely different.

Naturally she wasn't speaking spiritually, she was an atheist, and a rather tiresome one at that.

Actually, what I thought was interesting was that some people actually thought that the entire quote represented something more or different than the snip. Someone actually thought the snip made Rand look bad and said, "Well, you just don't understand what she was driving at; here, read the whole quote. Everyone understands that what she says in the whole quote is perfectly reasonable and laudible, right? Right?" In fact, it just shows her to be an insufferable egomaniac who espouses nearly the polar opposite of Christian thought, which is all the more fascinating when so many of her biggest fans are people who would identify as part of the conservative strand of Christianity. Rands words show her to be a person with serious psychological problems.

I don't understand how Christians can embrace her views. They're totally incompatible with Christian teachings.

And saying 'she's not talking about spiritual equality, she's talking about some other kind of equality' is totally avoiding the message she's attempting to pedal. Either we're equal or we're not. Either we love our neighbor as we love our self, or we don't. Saying we should love Joan of Arc more than a shop-girl is completely at odds with what Christianity teaches.

You are full of sh!t, Dewey.

But then, you don't understand much of anything, anyway.

This has nothing to do with "Christian thought".

It has to do with the leftwing pc "everybody's equal" bullsh!t.

Every human is equal in the eyes of God, yes. No one person is more or less important than the other. But that just flat out is not what the woman is talking about, and you lack the ability to comprehend it.

DAMN, how thick are some of you people????

The "message she's attempting to pedal (sic)" does not even remotely speak to "either we're equal or we're not".

We're NOT.

In the eyes of God, all of us are equal. When it comes to human compassion, all of us are equal. But when it comes to getting off your ass and making something of yourself, we're NOT all equal, and that is what the woman is talking about, not this goofball "religious" crap.

Geez. It's no wonder this world is in the mess it's in...

I have spent the last 3 or 4 weeks doing what I do every Christmas, which is providing Christmas for families who otherwise wouldn't have anything, thanks to worthless, shiftless, lazy assed bum fathers/husbands/boyfriends.

I see these worthless pieces of sh!t laying on their asses, abusing their wives, abusing their kids, and I'm sorry, but I just do not see where these pieces of sh!t are "equal" to any man who works and takes responsibility for his family.

Yes, God loves them equally to everyone else. But sorry, there's nothing in Christianity that says we have to consider them as equals to the man who treats his wife and children with love and respect, who gets off his ass and brings home a paycheck, and who tries to provide for his family.

THAT is what Rand is talking about. Not your touchy feely bullsh!t.

She is addressing the very sort of idiotic logic some of you are displaying here, where you try to merge one issue with the other to justify some sort of utopian lalaland "everyone is the same" bullsh!t.

In this quote, she isn't denigrating people who abuse their children, she's being contemptuous about regular working people, people who don't understand high art and like Disney and don't hear voices from God. People like most of us here, in other words.

And I'll repeat myself - I haven't read Ayn Rand, I found the book way too much like hard work, so I'm probably not qualified to comment. If this makes me thick, so be it.

No, you have it right. Objectivism is also about making the world a better place through pursuing your own endeavors and screw everybody else. It's the philosophy of the elitist and selfish.

It's telling that it's so hard to find a Rand fan who's down on their luck.
