...but it sounds good... The Name Jolly was introduced into the east coast of Scotland by the Vikings in the 9th century. The Name is believed to have orignated in Iceland. Trade was not important to the Vikings, the pattern in Europe was one of raid and loot, attack and carry off whatever seemed valuable to them. After raids into Britain, The Balitic states and France a few Norsemen would stay on to hold outpost rather than astablish colonies. After a while these outpost became settlements and raiders intermarried with the locals and gradually adopt more and more of their lifestyles. Scotland, Ireland, The eastern third of England and Northwest France bore the brunt of the Vikings assaults during the 9th century. The part of France closest to England is still called Normandy for these settlers. The name JOLLY is one of the oldest Huguenot surnames on record and emerged as a noable English/Irish family name in the county Edinburgh in 1450 James Jolly was Vicar of daily in 1541.George and Robert Jolly were the clan chiefs in 1677. Another line of JOLLY'S were FGrench Huguenots who emigrated fron France to English/Scotland to avoid persection from the French Catholics. Research indicates that the JOLLY name can associated with French meaning one who is agreeable or pleasant". It is also said the JOLLY name that comes from French stems from costal fishing areas where the small fishing boats used in those early times were called a " JOLLY". As many people who worked a craft such as "Smith" for Blacksmith etc. got their family name from their trade and those that worked with JOLLY'S eventually obtained the family name of JOLLY. You are likely to find sereral different spellings. Language changes, carelessness and high degree of illiteracy ( sometimes the man himself did not know how to spell his name) compounded the number of ways the name might have been spelled. Often the town clerk spelled the name the way it sounded to him. spelling variations of the JOLLY surname are: JOLLEY,JOLIE,JOLI. |
