Went to the Chicago Symphony last night. The program was this: Panufnik Concerto in modo antico Stravinsky Suite from The Firebird Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 3 (Polish) Panufnik was a Polish composer who died about 20 years ago. His Concerto (for trumpet) was NOT what you'd expect of mid-20th century music. It was almost Baroque in nature. Trilly trumpet solos, melodies that soared, and thoroughly engaging. The Firebird, well, what can I say. The CSO brass has always been among the world's best, and last night they didn't disappoint. Powerful and poignant, the CSO did a great job under Muti's baton. I've never been a fan of Tchaikovsky's music. I find it meandering, repetitive and...boring. Yes, there are some nice, and memorable, melodies. However, I was looking forward to the end of this piece. I know, I'm a Philistine. But, my seat. OH MY SEAT!!! Lower balcony, 3rd row, 5 seats from center aisle:

Part of the review from the Chicago Tribune... The Firebird...
That "coughing boor" was two seats away from me. Does the critic (John van Rhein) really think that this fellow "did his best to ruin the magic?" Does he really think that he coughed on purpose? I saw the man, and he did everything that he could to stifle the cough. But, as we all know, when it happens, there's little one can do to control it. |
