Bottom line: It's the shorter runs (Chicago to Milwaukee, or Boston to NYC) where you come out ahead on points, cost, and, most importantly, time.

Having said that, because I signed up for Amtrak's Mastercard, and I put my recent trip on it, by the end of next month, I'll have enough points for a free round trip to New Orleans (or anywhere bounded by Wolf Point, Montana, Denver, El Paso, New Orleans, Atlanta, Toledo) in a bedroom.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

I took Amtrak from Boston to Wilmington, DE and it was a pretty good trip, way better than we'd have managed with a flight plus car rental. The only real downside was that the train was filled with people who work in DC, and I didn't have earplugs.

If I don't happen to have mine on me, I don't leave the house.

I'm serious.

I got sat right in front of this gobsh!te who was boasting about all the people he knew in the journalism industry for the entire bloody trip. It was truly horrendous.

I would only train NY to Boston in bad weather. The shuttle is just too convenient, not like most flying. Going to DC and certainly Philly it's actually quicker to take the train, as well as more comfortable.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
Yep. I looked into Amtrak for the Boston-NY trip last spring and I would have spent more money and time than I did flying the shuttle first class. It just made no sense.
