Hope things are going well for him in England and he will be able to rejoin us soon.

+1, I miss him.

Thanks guys, and thanks everybody for all the messages on Facebook - I really appreciated all of them.

For anybody who wasn't aware, my dad died suddenly on September 15th, and I've been over there for the last couple of weeks - I just got back in last night after the funeral on Friday. I might write a bit more about him in the future - I'm still getting used to the idea at this point, and desperately ploughing through the office e-mails that have accumulated.

Welcome back, John. I know it has been a tough time. It is one thing when people we love die, quite another when we have responsibilities for what comes after.

There are some who say the last step in being a man, is when your father dies. I don't know if that's true, or not, but it's durn sure lonely sometimes.

God Bless you and yours, Mr. D'Oh.

She's still pretty shocked. She's been taking care of him for the last five years - he'd had a minor stroke, and was getting progressively slower since then, so she's lost touch with friends. My main job over the last couple of weeks was taking her places - a music concert, church, country walks etc. to make sure she did something positive each day, while we organised the funeral, and tried to make sense of what else needed to be done.

I wish I was closer - my brother's about 35 miles away, so he can visit, and they've got a 1-year old daughter to visit with, so that might help cheer things up a bit.

Welcome back, sorry to hear about your dad.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Does she still work? Maybe a trip to the US would be good for her, get her out of the house for the first Christmas without him?

She turns 84 in a couple of months - long since retired. I don't think she's up to the trip over here, they stopped visiting about 5 years ago, and it would stress her out massively to travel that far. It's small steps at the moment - persuading her to come with us to church was quite the challenge. I think it's the first time in my entire life I've tried to talk someone to come to church with me.

Very sorry to hear of your loss, JD. my dad is still alive so I haven't had to face that yet but he is almost 85.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, John. Please take care of yourself.

I understand a little of what you're going through. My FIL died suddenly at age 56. The first thing my husband said was, "I feel so old".
