The fattest place on earth?

As you may have gathered, we spent the last week at Disney World and I will post some pictures and a few anecdotes about the trip in the road trip thread. Consider yourself warned.

However, the biggest negative of the trip truly deserves it's own thread. I was astounded by the obesity levels in that park. There were so many people renting the scooters for no other physical infirmity than being obese. It was beyond absurd. They would proudly line up at the handicapped entrances along with amputees, stroke victims, kids in crutches and in casts, etc... I saw a family of four ride their scooters up to the handicapped entrance of a coaster, each of them dismounted and waddled up the line and each had to take their own cart on the roller coaster. Even the kids! Let me tell you, all of these fat people in the happiest place on earth were not very jolly. They were loud, obnoxious, rude, demanding, and crude. If this is the impression that many foreigners get of Americans, then Lord help us all.

I am also more than a little concerned with the physics involved. That much sheer tonnage of human flesh gathered in one spot that also happens to be built over swampy sinkholes? It's amazing the whole place hasn't collapsed in on itself and created a miniature black hole.

The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

I'll be at WDW in January. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll call Disney and advise them that we don't want to see a lot of fat people hanging around.

Thank goodness it is still OK to discriminate against them.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Mmmmmmm, pie!
Saw that in the grocery store a few days ago. Mother and daughter both riding in one of those motorized grocery carts, side by side which of course meant no one else could get through the aisle, or near a meat case...

But what really got to me was the almost orgasmic sounding snorting and moaning sounds they made as they examined items they'd picked up off the shelves. I had to leave the store because it was literally making me ill.

Way back when in the 70's when we had management training the scenarios involved being Joe's boss. And Joe did various things, good and bad, and you had to decide what to do about it. One was what do you do if Joe gets to be very overweight? To make a long story short the right answer was - fire him.

I since then I think fat people started to get some traction toward establishing a new protected class. But that idea seems to have faded in the last decade or so. Fat clothing models and tv stars are of course a protected class but in general I don't think fat people are as protected as they once were.

Google Disney Fat People - there is a lot of information.

Apparently they go back and forth between accommodating plus sizes and not accommodating them.

Here is a good example. They dropped an exhibit encouraging healthy eating habits because it made people who like unhealthy eating habits feel bad.

Disney World Closes Obesity Exhibit Because It's Hurtful To Fat Kids

After an unofficial opening last month, Disney World has closed its Epcot exhibit on childhood obesity following harsh criticism, Marni Jameson of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

The Habit Heroes exhibit (whose website has been shut down for maintenance) was developed in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield to teach children about healthy eating and lifestyle habits through interactive rooms and video-arcade games.

In a statement from the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance, the organization accused Disney of using the "tool of shame" as a way to talk to kids.

The Huffington Post reports that the theme park responded to questions about the exhibit's suspension with the following statement:

We are currently in a soft opening period for Habit Heroes, which gives us a chance to collect guest feedback and test and adjust the attraction prior to its opening. In order to work on further improving and refining the experience, we've decided to close the attraction for the time being. We look forward to officially opening it soon.

Habit Heroes was originally scheduled to open on March 5.

I'm glad not everyone shares that prejudice. I've been overweight since my childhood and that hasn't prevented me from engaging in a successful 40+ year engineering career.

LD -- I had a similar Disney experience a few years back. Very hard to walk around the park with all those scooters. Have you seen the children's movie Wall-E (sp?)?
