If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead

A week with friends in the Napa area. They were neighbors and friends here for many years, and bought a retirement home in Napa when the market dropped. We will focus on the Carneros region, then up in Russian River and Stag's Leap areas. What am I excited about? In-N-Out Burger and The Habit Burger! |

Well known for their special hot meat between two soft pillowy buns, drizzled with creamy sauce. BTW, have a great time Mik! |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

Have a great time, Mik! This thread makes me think I'm lucky we never stopped at the Jack places. There are so many, I was wondering if they were any good. |

We love the In-N-Out Burger, Riley. It's all so fresh! I can taste the difference the freshness makes. Even the fries are fresh cut. |

During our recent trip to CA, we stopped at a Jack-in-the-Box restaurant, but there were so many flies in the place, including in the cooking area, that we got grossed out and left without ordering anything. |

Jack in the Box is the worst of the chains, IMHO, although Del Taco gives them a run for their $. |

Jack in the box food is SO bad they have to HIRE their flies. But right now we are enjoying lunch at Poggio's in Sausalito. Awesome. |

Only in California. I just saw a girl go by on an elliptical on wheels. It was too cool and I may need one. |

So tell me, oh wise ones, about the Panda Express and El Pollo Loco. The second one always makes me think of Breaking Bad.

Panda express is junk, and probably further away than the nearest family owned chinese restaurant, wherever you start from. I like el pollo loco. |

Panda Express is hit or miss. In a lot of shopping mall food courts it's usually the best of a bad lot. The veg are good, stay away from the entrees in the sweet citrus sauces. You can sub veg for the noodles/fried rice and it's a good idea. They also sub a decent steamed rice at no extra charge. It's possible to get a great lunch there with less than 600 calories but you have to work at it. I know way more about food court food than I should. When I have my stuff together I pack my own lunch. Go for the veg based dishes. Broccoli beef is pretty good, as is green bean chicken. Bejing beef is good, but (sorry, Aqua) only masochists actually eat the chilis. As a Minnesotan, it will help you to think of them as bay leaves. No one actually eats them. Skip the egg rolls - they are inedible. El Pollo can be really, really good. In sketchy neighborhoods they can be a little intimidating (I'm looking at YOU, Santa Ana) but in a decent neighborhood like Claremont you can't go wrong. The stuff comes in fresh and you can see how they do it. The citrus marinade on the chicken is outstanding and the open flame cooking technique works very well. The steamed veg are as good as you find anywhere, the beans are cooked from scratch and the salsas, while not particularly inspired, are serviceable and available in three levels of spice. The crazy thing about The Crazy Chicken is that there is nothing authentic about it. I am not aware of any regional cuisine that uses that citrus marinade, and the mashed potatoes? Fugeddabout 'em. Mexicans don't eat mashed potatoes. It's a corporate CA take on what Mexican food tastes like, they do fresh and fairly simply and it's good. Pass on the "steak" - these guys do chicken. |

Great suggestions there, Steve. We have yet to try the Panda Express or El Pollo Loco, and we don't go for the fast food places unless we have to, but that's why it would be nice to know which ones to try when there's no time to shop around. Many times what we do for lunch on the road is to go to a local grocery store and get some fresh cherry tomatoes, dark grapes, crackers, fresh mozzarella, or an aged white cheddar, maybe some slices of a hard sausage or prosciutto, and then we make a picnic style lunch. I keep disposable bowls, paper towel, a small kitchen knife that has a blade cover, and some plastic utensils in the vehicle. We bring a cooler of bottled water, too. I wash the veg and fruit at the grocery store. That's the awkward part of the thing, but I can usually find a sink or water fountain. If not, there is the bottled water. |

It's especially handy when we go through the national parks. We sometimes just munch our lunch right there at the park. Pretty nice place to take a break! |

Nice day today. Sparkling tasting at Domaine Carneros, lunch at Boon Fly Cafe, then a tasting at the beautiful Artesa Winery. My host is in the wine industry here so we get comped and private tastings. Nice. |
