Guy Fawkes Night, in the UK, commemorating the dastardly Papist plot to overthrow the British parliament in 1605.

This one specifically is from the Lewes Bonfire which is particularly huge. I believe the crosses originally comemmorated protestant martyrs who were burned at the stake by Henry VIII and Mary Tudor, however I suspect their main function nowadays is to look scary cool.

Henry VIII was a lovely bloke. He only stopped burning protestants so that he could start burning Catholics.

After the passage of Quebec Act in 1774 November 5 became known as Pope Day in the American colonies out of fear that the British Crown was going to introduce French Law and guarantee rights for Catholics throughout the colonies. Burning effigies of the pope were quite popular.

In 2001 they apparently burnt an effigy of Osama bin Laden in Lewes.

Pretty sure they were used for that function back in the day, too.
I cite irreconcilable differences.
