It would make absolutely no sense for Democrats to want exemptions to ACA and Republicans to want none. You're telling me this is what's happened? |

Actually they do. It's the law of the land and it's even been tested in the Supreme Court. Americans even re-elected the guy responsible for it by a wide margin as opposed to the guy who swore to do away with it. The rest of her argument falls apart from there. |

Well, she probably looked at it as the Americans overwhelmingly voted against the guy who pioneered it in a Northeastern state. |

Yep. In the senate it's Vitter's bill. Don't know who authored the House version. |

Please do, and make sure you include articles reporting on how the Democrats shut down the government because they couldn't get their way. |

Not really. Its far more complicated than that. Keep in mind the exchanges are for people in the individual policy market (generally speaking). Congressional staff wouldn't normally be in the individual policy market, like any other lawyers in America with full time jobs they'd have employer provided healthcare that maybe they pay a small portion of out of their paychecks. And so if they were 'being treated like the rest of the country', that's pretty much the way things would be now. However, back when they were passing the ACA, Congress decided to have their staff get insurance from the exchanges, in order to show 'extra' support for the concept. And, since the attorneys working for congressmen would normally have most of their health care premiums paid by their employer, that's what the current plan is - staff go to exchanges, but their employer (Federal Gov't) pays most of the premium. Enter David Vitter. (R, LA) He argues, somewhat disingenuously, that congress is getting 'special treatment' and pushes a bill that disallows the congressional staff to have employer-subsidized health care premiums. Well, its true that if you or I didn't have healthcare through our employer, and went to the exchanges, we would not get the subsidies that the congressional staff get (at least not at those income levels). However, having the government contribute to healthcare premiums for its employees is hardly 'special treatment', since these staff attorneys would certainly get employer-provided healthcare at any other job they'd take. I say 'somewhat disingenuous' - its true congressional staff are getting 'special treatment', but the 'special treatment' isn't the employer subsidy, which is standard in this portion of the labor market, rather the 'special treatment' is the fact that they get to/have to use the exchanges. So really to remove 'special treatment' you'd drop the exchange requirement, not the subsidy. But Vitter, et al doesn't want to end 'special treatment' for congressional staff, rather he wants to increase leverage on the other party. |

I'm not comfortable with Congress at all. The very nature of our system is FUBAR, so going after one political party while pretending another is some kind of chivalrous entity or just a lesser evil is ridiculous. They both thoroughly suck. |

Keep in mind that many of the people in the Exchange Market, recently had health insurance through their employer. Some are throwing around the figure of 22M people who have seen their employer-subsidized health insurance go bye-bye, forcing them into the Exchange. In light of that, Vitter's bill does not look quite as disingenuous. |

I realize that's political talk for "you disagree with me" but going once again back to basics: many people have now become suddenly unemployed because political parties won't work together, and a lot of those people will not be getting back pay. Republicans have had three years to do something about ACA if they wanted to; this was not some out-of-the-blue thing. Yes, I place more of the blame on them. For a party who's always ranting and raving about "supporting the American family" they're directly screwing many of them over. So yeah, **** them indeed. |

It defies logic that in a two-party system, with both parties chasing the same goal and formed pretty much along the same lines, that one would be right/decent/honest the majority of the time, and one wrong/corrupt dishonest all the time. Anybody who can't see this is delusional. |
