HOLY CARP!!!

Thanks, Brenda! I'm doing well, though my job is ridiculously busy right now. But in the spring I was talked into applying for the vice principal pool, so this will likely be my last year working as a consultant. There are only two of us in the pool (despite opening the pool twice last school year) so it won't be terribly long, I'm sure. Liam is doing well - he is in grade seven (egad!) and is enjoying school. Rob is still working out of our home office, and it's awesome to have him here - he makes the busy work schedule possible and keeps me from going insane. We started taking fencing together as a family this fall, which is a lot of fun, though I'm afraid I am quite dreadful at it! But I'm hoping Liam continues to love it and that he will want to get into it more seriously. We shall see! As for my mom, she must got home from her summer at the cottage. She couldn't knit socks fast enough to keep up with the sales at the farmers market up there. I'm guessing she sold maybe 80 pairs. Now she is prepping for a big Christmas craft show. |

Dol, you would make a great principal. I hope it works out! |

She switched to the teaching consultant job about 5 years ago IIRC. I remember a thread where she missed dealing directly with kids all day. Wouldn't a VP job have the same problem, dol? Oh, and welcome back!

Klaus - I am still a teacher, but my current role is a central one. I work with teachers to help them refine their assessment practices. I also analyse data for our superintendents. It's a huge job, and to be honest, it isn't really "fun" the way teaching is. Immensely satisfying and a certain degree of influence, but not "fun". Though right now I am leading about 80 full day kindergarten educators in how to use iPads for documenting student learning. I got to hang out in a bunch of kindergarten classes (3-5 year olds) and it was a lot of fun! But generally, my job is better defined by lots of other adjectives. As for the principal role... in our schools, especially in elementary, the role of the principal is ideally as an instructional leader. There's lots of other stuff that goes along with it, but our best principals are with kids and in classrooms for huge portions of their day. Great principals don't spend a lot of time hanging out in their office. So to answer your question, Riley, it's not the same as teaching a classroom of kids all day but there is a lot of kid time that I certainly don't get now. |

What wonderful news all around, Dol! You will be an excellent principal. It seems like a perfect fit for you. You have a broad background that will serve you well in that role. You're ready for it. Having Rob work from home is a real plus right now. Good for both of you to make that work. Liam is in seventh grade? Oh my. Tick tock. That's a very fun age, and I know you know that. What a perfect time to do some fun family stuff like the fencing. Even if you're not good at it, it doesn't matter. Just doing it with your family matters, that and being able to tell your students you know how. They'll behave just a little bit better for someone who can say that. Why doesn't it surprise me your mom sells out of the socks? I remember how cool they look, so I'm just jealous she doesn't sell them where I live. Is she making more socks for the Christmas show, or something else? Tell her I am currently making my very own carpetbag as a rug hooking project. |

Thanks for the update, Dol! I hope you come back more often. I enjoy to "hear" from you via updates to your Flickr stream, but that's of course a rather limited window into your life. |
