so here it is.

This gives some nice perspective.

My argument against the shutdown is simply politics - I think it will damage the GOP more than the Democrats (though so far the polls show it is a lot closer than I thought).

i was leaving it for you, my friend. Political slant aside, the history is interesting.

I would bet that the same arguments were used by whatever party was in the majority in the past shut downs. And will be used again.

I think the repubs basically shot themselves in the ass and helped Hillary get a step closer to the whitehouse.

Which is why the more thoughtful ones didn't want to go down this path.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

And are likely to get thrown out in the primaries.

Nice little corner they've painted themselves in to, this.

Nice little corner they've painted themselves in to, this. I see a three party system on the horizon, but that's just me.

Three party system? Given the voting system in the US, wouldn't a three party system at best be a short-lived exceptional situation?

Not necessarily. There is a growing disaffection with both parties, and although they are long standing ones, they are by no means guaranteed permanence.

What is happening here is legislators are listening to the people who sent them to Washington. I believe the feeling is that we will feel pain one way or the other - there is no way to avoiding the spending and debt hangover. Better to feel it now before we are in deeper. There are also very deep feelings about the role and size of the federal government.

We are seeing growing pains. How this all shakes out is yet to be seen.

And that's really the problem.
I cite irreconcilable differences.
