How they're actually behaving indicates they believe that if they don't kill it in the womb, it'll never be killed.
A good assumption to make; once the government sinks its teeth into something, it never lets go.

But it's still just mad.

"When you get the members off the talking points you come to a simple conclusion: They don't face consequences for taking these hardline positions."

Exactly.
At some point, it doesn't matter...not personal consequences.

Most of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence met personal ruin of some kind. Yet, all would have signed, even knowing what lay in front of them.

There comes a time when you stand by your convictions and those of the people you represent. You stand fast, plant your banner in the ground, and what happens, happens.
Neither our current politicians nor a significant part of their voters realistically have that attitude. Most people vote for whoever serves them financially, or whoever they think serves them financially. And most elected politicians take that into account only as much as they have to while acting to extend their political careers as much as possible. Most everything else is just talk.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Besides, this is going to affect a whole lot more than just the government workers if this continues. Who would you like to blame for us having so many government contractors? They're just as affected by the shutdown. And of course in D.C. this is going to affect nearly everything: hotel reservations, the restaurant business (that's already happening), cab fares, courier services and countless others. And by the way, they're not getting any back pay if their businesses hit a slump. But I suppose you don't much care about any of that because the government isn't acting the way you want it to?

You know, a few years back, I had a high level administrator walk into my office. He instructed me to lay off one of my people due to budget considerations. I offered an empty slot, since that would accomplish what the bean counters wanted to accomplish, which was a reduction in TO for the hospital.

I was told "no". If we were going to lay off people, this guy wanted it to hurt. I didn't understand why, not at the time, but I've come to understand the tactic, while not necessarily approving of it.
That guy's not fit to manage other people. Hopefully one day he gets his, because although he wants it to hurt, he clearly isn't suffering any pain. From my experience with this type of person, he's actually more likely to get a kick out of the firings.
Maybe he's not fit, but he's currently managing about 6000 of them.

I don't agree with him, but I finally understood what he was trying to do...By laying people off, rather than positions, he created a stink. By creating a stink, he was attempting to gain leverage in both the private and public sectors and he was trying to use that leverage to prevent further cuts.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
I have never known anyone who enjoyed letting people go or making the decision to do so. I don't think most people understand how reluctantly that is done in most cases.

Work for more people.

Plenty enjoy it. Not most, probably, but plenty.

I worked at a place where a lot of the people were really obsessed with building the company. And as part of that there was no hesitation at all in firing anyone who didn't measure up.

It was pretty harsh at times but it really wasn't about being a jerk or anything like that.

It was a few thousand like-minded people who really, really demanded excellence of each other. New employees were told up front that it would be tough. The percentage of employees who made it through the first year was probably less than 40%. As the company grew to many thousands of employees that edge got progressively softer.

I don't really think it was all that rare, maybe it was. I wasn't there but I believe you could find a culture similar to this in NASA in the 60's.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Gee, he could have laid himself off to create that "stink."

A good friend of mine--a current co-worker, actually--is a district manager for an East Coast store chain. His job is to fix broken branches. He does this by firing people. Usually just a handful of employees here and there, but if there's a problem with management, he fires the entire store and starts new.

Another guy I went to school with is the head of the judicial board at a local college. His job is to call students into his office and expel them.

They love what they do. They absolutely love it.

Firing people for non-performance is fine. That, I can understand.

Firing people just to create a "stink"?
That's just bull****.
People who do that should fire themselves for that "stink."

The further away people get from the people they're messing up, the easier it gets, and some people really do love wielding power. Generally, the poor sod who has to deliver the bad news isn't the one nursing the boner.

Truthfully, no.

Any one person affected by a political entity is worth 3 votes, sometimes more. You take out 30 people from a staff of 550, and you have at least 100 people mad as hell.

Hospital CEOs are so short-lived, you sometimes don't hardly notice when they leave and when they arrive. Except for the change of the I-love-me-wall in their office.

Complete agreement.

When a company gives the bean-counters control of the company, it's a doomed company.
