First time of not being with daughter on her birthday. Presents arrived to her, including some treats. Sent her birthday wishes by text and FB.

Think I need to get out of the house for a while.

Thought about it and came up with a plan. Daughter is at a conference later this week, and it's in Minneapolis. I asked her if her dad and I could bring birthday cake to all the Mudders attending the conference on Friday night after the conference closes. She checked with the professor coordinating the trip, and her prof said a resounding yes to cake. Maybe it helped that I specified it would be chocolate?

We get to see daughter this Friday, and I'll bring cake, plates, forks, and napkins for over 40 people. Easy peasy! :woot:

Never underestimate a Minnesooooota Momma or the power of chocolate.

 I admit I was pretty bummed earlier today. Daughter's itinerary left no room for a family visit, so we thought there was no chance.

I am not above bribing bringing cake for the entire group to get to see my girl. :lol2:

I was about to say "won't you see her in a couple weeks for Thanksgiving anyway?", but then I realized you folks put Thanksgiving in the wrong month. ;)

Riley, she won't be home for Thanksgiving at all. Her next trip home is for Christmas.

This conference in Minnesoooota that she is attending is over two hours away, so it's about a 4.5 to 5 hour round trip for us to see her. That's still a short trip compared to the 3800 mile round trip from Minnesoooota to California.

Hmm, here it is usual to go home for Thanksgiving, but students also rarely attend schools out of Province the way they do in the US.

At least in Ontario it is like that, because there is such an abundance of colleges and universities, it may be different in smaller provinces.

It's very expensive to fly from California to Minnesota. The last flights we looked at for her Christmas trip home are over $800 round trip. To spend that much $$$ for two days home at Thanksgiving is rather much.

Yes, the college is paying all the expenses and provided some spending money. Of course, that comes from the tuition we pay, but she might as well take advantage of the opportunity since we pay for it no matter what.
How nice that it's in Minnesota.

Riley, I should mention that many of the students at her college come from a distance and cannot go home for Thanksgiving. Her dorm is the one that hosts a Thanksgiving dinner for students who stay on campus.

The good news is that the winter break is four weeks long.

Yeah winter breaks are about 4 weeks here too. The vast majority of students in Ontario go to school within Ontario, and there are cheap shuttle buses on holiday weekends. I can count on one hand the number of people I can think of that went to school out of province. Actually I can count on 2 fingers, because that's all I can think of right now. :P

I imagine Ontario probably has quite a few more universities and colleges than Minnesoooota though, plus it seems like a more common thing in the US to go to school out of state. Or maybe that's just my impression from reading TNCR.

Minnesota has a huge number of colleges and universities. Daughter got accepted into one of the top schools in the nation, so that is what made her choose such a distant location. There are thousands of kids from other states and countries who choose schools in Minnesota, because we are known for good schools here, too. We just don't have one like the one daughter chose. It specializes in math, sciences, and engineering, and also also includes a liberal arts curriculum. The most comparable schools to Harvey Mudd are MIT and Cal Tech, if you are familiar with those. Harvey Mudd offers advantages for the undergrads that the other two don't.

I wish it was closer, but I'm still glad daughter got the opportunity to attend HMC.

Hey Brenda...will you be sending something special for that Thanksgiving Dinner? We have found it very handy to be known as the parents that share. Easter baskets for instance.

That's a marvelous idea, Mik. I can put out some ideas to daughter for her to share with the dorm members in charge of the meal. I have no idea how many kids stay for the Thanksgiving meal there. There are so many from far away, it could be a large number like 200 to 300. Then again, there will be plenty of options for them other than the dorm meal, so they may serve only 50 to 100. The number will greatly affect what I can offer.

If you have ideas or suggestions, please post.

You don't have to feed them all... just Brendaette and friends.

Make it exquisite and shippable!

Well, that simplifies the concept very nicely. They will have a whole weekend to nibble, so it could be for the smaller group. Daughter has hinted she would love some of my sourdough bread. I could splurge and have it shipped express or overnight. Perhaps that does not reach the level of exquisite, but when she hints for something that's a good sign. The challenge is the perishable nature of the exquisite. Even a priority package can take two to three days to arrive.
