Superbowl Ads were rather mediocre this year

Very few decent commercials this year and even those that were were definitely not overwhelmingly great. No Apple "1984" jawdropping spots, and even Dodge's attempt at recreating the "Back to Work" spot with Clint from last year fell flat. I thought the Clydesdale spot was pretty good, and the Hyundai commercial about where kids come from had me smiling, but few really stand out in my memory.

On the other side of the coin, there were some spots that were truly aweful. The GoDaddy Beauty and the Geek spot? Blech.

Which ones did you like, and which ones bombed?

My favorite two were the Paul Harvey spot and the Clydesdale.

The Paul Harvey one was the best for me. Don't ask me what they were advertising though. :whome:

The Paul Harvey/Dodge spot was one that I thought ultimately fell a little flat.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Me too. The farmer one made me think of my grandfather. That poem always does, but with the scenery it was really nice. The Clydesdale made me think of work.

I also laughed at the Taco Bell commercial.
And how are you today?

My dad grew up on the family farm. He's told me the hard work thing is a bit overblown, especially taking into account that they get winters off.

I think most of our cultural narratives about the relative nobility and sacrifice of some professions over others are mostly based in nonsense, or at best anachronisms. I wouldn't mind but for the fact that the everyday private sector working stiff, who funds the whole shebang, gets lost in the hagiography of "public servants" like the military, police, fire fighters, teachers, and farmers (what with all their subsidies they may as well be in the public sector).

On the nobility and sacrifice scale the anonymous working stiff has a well earned position.

Since when do farmers get Winters off? as even pet owners know, there are no days off when you have animals. For my family, the poem is very accurate.

Considering the venue, it's a damn shame someone didn't write a poem describing the sacrifice and nobility of professional footballers. Those guys just get nothing!
