How on earth can this be interpreted to be racist? I don't get it.

I think you could only view ths as racist if you actually believed Jamaicans were inferior, thus any reference to the Jamaicanness of Jamaicans would be insulting.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

These critics should get a life. How does that differ from Mrs Clinton
feigning a southern accent, or Mr Obama talking "Street".
When I watched it just now a real commercial for Toyota came on.
Three scantly clad black girls and a black guy were in it. Are they suggesting that all black girls get out of Toyota's and show off their ass? and is that a bad thing?
I'M NOT YELLING.........I'M ITALIAN...........THAT'S HOW WE TALK!

I think people horribly misuse the word "racist" so often, that any making-light or making-fun of anything not WASPy is now racist.

The Rasta culture isn't even a "race" - but beyond that, the ad isn't making some qualitative judgement about that culture. If anything, one not knowing the American corporate culture or the Rasta culture would walk away from the commercial feeling as if the drab colors and depressing actions of the corporate world are made to seem less desirable than the vibrant colors, easy-going attitude, and style of the rasta culture - not qualitatively better.
"Racist" is a horrible word to use anywhere near this.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

You could of course make the course that Jar Jar was racist in some respect.

Much more blatantly "racist" is what Michael Bay did in Transformers 2 with these two street-wise robots:

Yeah, and the way they moved and talked was ridiculous.

I thought it was hilarious. If they hadn't done it so well, it would have fallen flat (and anything might have been concluded) but not this way.

Likewise (can't think of a context where it would have fit, BUT), it could have been really funny to hear black people doing a super Yiddish accent. But ONLY - well!

Say, anybody remember this joke?

Two Jewish buds are eating in a kosher deli restaurant, New York, one treating the other. To the astonishment of the guest, they are waited on by a Chinese waiter in FLUENT Yiddish. The guest - when he can catch his breath - asks WHAT it's all about. How come, what th-?

"SHHH!!" the host says, looking around to be sure the waiter isn't within earshot. "He thinks it's English!"

I like that too and in somewhat the same way (this excludes the VW interest - about the happy-go-lucky attitude being represented).
(N.b. The joke really ought to be taking place at least a half century ago, but never mind)

Just the other day I was working and started chanting "Phil Galituni" to myself, which is how she once explained was how she remembered Rich Gallassini's name (referencing Philly and Piano Tuning).
It made me chuckle, and I said a little prayer for her, and kept saying it and laughing.
I forget what her name for me was.
Anyone?

No - she undoubtedly referred to him as Phil Gallituni - this goes back to Pianoworld.

She did mention "Phil Gassolini" twice here that I can find ... so perhaps she had two names for him.

I went back and searched, and her name for me was "Caviar" - ... HAHA!

And - here's a post where both are used together on PW.

So it looks like both were used. :)

5 things:

1) Can't be racist if it's based on a culture/nationality, right?
2) Is it "racist" if they are COMPLIMENTING them on something?
3) White people are Jamaican too
4) Not even that good of a commercial
5) VW is loving the free PR
