How are things? How's the job search going? You making good use of your downtime? And did you guys end up going on that vacation or canceling? |

HOLY CARP!!!

Oops, guess I didn't go down the page far enough and I missed this. Still looking. I have had two interviews with potential employers and two interviews with temp agencies and one interview with a recruiter that I hope will turn into a job. Every day I wade through about 500 job postings on nine job boards or gov't websites. Out of those I usually find about 3-5 a week to apply for. First interview was with the County. Would have been at the courthouse and in charge of evidence and subpoenas. Pay wasn't great but the job security appealed to me. The interview was okay, but they told me right off that the salary range and promise to pay "based on experience" was all an illusion and that they were going to hire at the bottom of the pay scale. So, if they had offered, which they didn't, I would have had to pass. Second interview was at a company that was the big dog national player in Third Party Administrators - so doing exactly what I'd done the last 10 years. The job was appealing because my supervisor was a former co-worker that left last April and we got along well. The main client was going to be a University risk pool which would have been very interesting and I thought that dovetailed in with my prior experience handling governmental entity claims. Interview went great, I thought, and I even dropped off the handwritten thank you note to the Claims Manager the next day. Then it was radio silence for a week (former co-worker and I are FB friends) and then yesterday got the email shooting me down. I did meet with that recruiter about a position I think I would love. It is little to no claims work, but is all Risk Management for a large manufacturing company. They make mining, drilling, excavating, etc. equipment. Large global company and I would step into an up and running program and report to an overworked Risk Manager. Sounds quite varied, interesting, and busy and the company is certainly stable enough that I could finish my career there. Just a few hurdles to get past with the Risk Manager - just to get the interview - and then I hope I can sufficiently impress her and land that position. I admit I haven't done to much with my down time other than to search for jobs and enjoy good breakfasts every day. My stash of granola bars are going stale. I have fixed a few things around the house and am trying to attend to other issues. I did apply for a "forgivable" mortgage loan from the gov't - it may pay some or all of our mortgage until I find work and as far as I can determine, doesn't need to be paid back. More gov't largesse! We did cancel the vacation. I felt it was too much of a risk (about a $3500 swing in funds) and my wife would not have enjoyed the trip at all, worrying about finances. The airline tickets were not refundable so I do have to reschedule and use those by August. I also have a non-refundable stay for a weekend in Las Vegas, so will use the tickets to fly my wife and I there in June and then I suppose another trip to Utah to use up more of the credit. Anything left over I might just give to my oldest to take a trip somewhere. She's pretty adventurous. |

Thanks for the update, Kincaid. I hope you get a position you can keep and enjoy for the rest of your working career. Good call on the vacation option. You'll be glad you waited, and you'll enjoy it more later. |
