Tonight I finally closed my campaign finance account of several years from my last campaign. It feels a little odd, almost sad, to close it, but if I run for anything in the future, I'd need a new account anyway.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
It's funny how endings from long ago can affect you.

Yep, this one is bothering me, and I did not expect it.

Curious, did you have to donate the remaining funds? I think congress does.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Yes, I did have to donate the remaining funds. Minnesooooota campaign finance law allows the candidate to retain funds under $100, but no more than that.

The donation is almost always to another campaign or to a political unit, such as a your local county or district party unit, or to the state party.

Some donations are intended to 'make a statement', but mine was not. I've seen candidates donate their funds to an opponent of someone they despise, even to candidates outside their own party. I offered to donate mine to a couple of great candidates in my State House and Senate district, but they had already maxed out their party campaign contribution limits. Our local county unit was flush with funds, and had completed all their spending commitments, so I sent mine to the state party. They actually needed it the most this year.
