Silly Larry ... that's Mixed Martial Arts, not mere "boxing." What makes you think those are liberals anyway? Because a man is not afraid to very tightly embrace another man horizontally? |

MERE boxing?! I dig MMA, and respect the hell out of it, but boxing isn't some "lesser" version of MMA, sir. |

As a sport? No - actually it's not. Boxing as a "martial art" may be included in the martial arts represented in MMA - if that's what you mean, then yes I agree. As a sport, Boxing is a completely different thing with a rich and varied history, specific rules, scoring, and very different objectives. Hierarchically speaking, MMA would be a "subset" of boxing - though that's not technically correct either. |

To be clear, that's not to diss on Wing Chung - as you know I'm a huge fan. I just found it funny that you'd devalue something you don't like that's too mainstream or whatever. I'd call you a hipster if you didn't hate them so much. Boxing has a very rich heritage, and whether or not you like the sport, it's a somewhat involved sport (as any old timer who's into boxing can tell you). It also has a very rich cultural history as a means of conflict resolution (even with scoring as a sport) in Romani cultures, Irish, etc. My only point originally was that boxing is more than two guys trying to hurt one another like a dog fight - and it's hardly a "subset" of MMA. |

Yeah, actually I have little problem with boxing, I was just being a douche. ![]() MMA I've grown to dislike because it's just turned into the same stuff over and over. Submission grappling is all it goes into, and you know, that's not the end-all, be-all as anyone would tell you. There's also a huge tendency among MMA fans to speak about their sport from a standpoint of expert knowledge when really they themselves haven't spent one afternoon training. I get less of that from the boxing crowd. |

Well, it's like this ... the barrier-to-entry is so much higher for MMA than it is for boxing, so fewer people get to train for MMA compared to boxing. You have analogous situation with more people commenting on how a President or Prime Minister should run a country as if they are experts in running countries, and quite fewer people commenting on how you should flip a burger as if they are expert burger flippers. |

And for the record, I very much like mainstream things. I very much like to read Robert Frost, Joseph Sheridan le Fanu, Robert Burns and of course Bill Shakespeare. Snorri's Edda are also a trip. Regarding music, I like all kinds of mainstream stuff. I enjoy the Götterdämmerung just as much as I do Led Zepp and Rush. I can't help that none of my interests are mainstream currently. I stopped taking notice of modern trends right around 1994, which is when I think our arts and culture finally crumbled. Once we stop being obsessed with ****e more akin to finger painting than artistic work, then I'll start paying attention again. Until then I'll stick with my punk rock and William Gibson and try to ride it out. |
