When whites approach 40% of the population, they self-segregate.

Even in England.

Based on studies regarding "white flight" and suburbanization that I've seen in the past, it would seem that the tipping point is actually somewhere around the 70-75% range.

Sometimes there is unhealthy (I wouldn't say evil) intent; other times there isn't. But the outcome of separating into balkanized ethnic groups, and eliminating living elbow-to-elbow with people who are different, can most definitely have unhealthy, and even evil, results.

I haven't said that it ever was. That doesn't make its effects any less unhealthy.

No, but it makes it consistent with human history.

There are a lot of things consistent with human history that have had negative, even disastrous, results.

How do you know that not self-segregating will produce a better result?

How do you know that not self-segregating will produce a better result?
Because self-segregating results in a lack of understanding and trust of the other. It leads to not only balkanized geography, but intellect as well. Isolating people into ghettoes of similar race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, etc., whether imposed or self-willed, inevitably results in not only unhealthy, insufficient, and dangerous misunderstanding of the others to whom you aren't exposed, but it also ultimately causes stagnation and withering of the vibrance and ability to grow and adapt within the particular group that you're trying to isolate and identify with. It's unhealthy for both the people who are banding together to be apart from others, at least as much as it's unhealthy for the others from whom one has separated from. History shows it to be the case over, and over, and over again, that segregation, regardless of whether the people involved want it or not, ultimately ends up being unhealthy in the grand scheme.

Outside the Blakans, a small region, where else have we seen that? I'm not trying to give you a hard time, I just don't see what you see. The most successful nation on earth was built pretty much on European Caucasuans.

Segregation in action. Ultimately healthy in the grand scheme.

Every year millions of Americans celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but they may not be aware of how great an influence St. Patrick was on the subsequent history of civilization. Not only did he bring Christianity to Ireland, he instilled a sense of literacy and learning that would create the conditions that allowed Ireland to become "the isle of saints and scholars" — and thus preserve Western culture while Europe was being overrun by barbarians. In this entertaining and compelling narrative, Thomas Cahill tells the story of how Europe evolved from the classical age of Rome to the medieval era. Without Ireland, the transition could not have taken place. Not only did Irish monks and scribes maintain the very record of Western civilization — copying manuscripts of Greek and Latin writers, both pagan and Christian, while libraries and learning on the continent were forever lost — they brought their uniquely Irish world-view to the task.

As Cahill delightfully illustrates, so much of the liveliness we associate with medieval culture has its roots in Ireland. When the seeds of culture were replanted on the European continent, it was from Ireland that they were germinated. In the tradition of Barbara Tuchman's A Distant Mirror, How The Irish Saved Civilization reconstructs an era that few know about but which is central to understanding our past and our cultural heritage. But it conveys its knowledge with a winking wit that aptly captures the sensibility of the unsung Irish who relaunched civilization.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Never really thought about it till just now, but off the top of my head I'd guess my neighborhood is 50% latino, 20% asian, 20% black, 10% white.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Outside the Blakans, a small region, where else have we seen that? I'm not trying to give you a hard time, I just don't see what you see. The most successful nation on earth was built pretty much on European Caucasuans.
That "most successful" nation on earth is a great example of what I mean.

We have been "successful" mostly from the reference point of those European Caucasians. Its "success" is something quite different when examined from the standpoint of African slaves, upon whose shoulders was created a huge amount of the success and wealth of those European Caucasians, and whose family structures were destroyed through the institution in ways that still carry echoes in African-American society. It's something quite different when examined from the standpoint of Native Americans, whose lands were systematically taken from them with little - practically no meaningful - compensation, and who were for some 150 years the victims of state-sanctioned genocidal policies. I could go on and detail the incredibly "unsuccessful" and unhealthy way that we European Caucasians treated every single wave of non-European Caucasians, but you get the idea here. Time after time after time, we justified treating "others" in barbarous, unthinkably inhumane ways - marginalizing, oppressing, persecuting, and even killing them - that were only possible because we didn't see the other as being equally human as we were ourselves. This blindness to the humanity of others is only possible if you are not living in some reasonable manner alongside one another, experiencing life through not only our own eyes but the eyes of our (literal) neighbors, discovering not only in our heads but our hearts as well that even though they may be very different, they aren't so different at all. It's very true that it's hard to hate someone whom you've broken bread with - or barbecued with, or worked the Pinewood Derby with, or worked together on a community board with, or coached Little League with. It's all those little things that teach us most effectively and conclusively about the humanity of those who are different from us. The most effective answer to problems among different people is their living together, not separately. Living separately might create a temporary, false sense of peace or security or community. But it comes at the expense of longer term healthy attitudes toward others, and because of that, it ultimately undermines the very kinds of things that the segregation intended to protect and preserve. In the end, all that segregation preserves is ignorance and mistrust.

I'm all for increased understanding through sharing experiences, but I think you're being a little too judgmental about this kind of trend, Dewey. There are many factors that go into choosing where to live, and running away from minorities is probably pretty low on the priority list. Better education systems, cheaper everything and higher quality of life are probably more important for most.

Then there's the other side of the coin. I've lived in many a "diverse area," however you want to define it. I can't recall ever noticing someone being glad that a white person was around, thereby increasing the diversity of the neighborhood.

Most people don't care. Very few places I've lived in had any sense of community at all. Most folks in American suburbs and urban areas go home, lock the doors and wait until morning to return to work. We don't know our neighbors and couldn't care less what their ethnicity is, let alone their names.

Still others did not like my being there. Neighbors didn't want to get to know me, and businesses didn't want me as a customer. They had their own segregated communities and had no reason to change. I was the outsider.

Again, you're right about the importance of understanding people from different backgrounds. But I shouldn't have to seek minority neighbors just to prove I'm an accepting person, especially when the neighbors either don't care or want me gone.
I cite irreconcilable differences.
