Manti's going with the flat denial defense.

Says he lied to his father and everybody else about having met her.

Defends against the questions about why he didn't skype or video call in any way by saying he tried but she was never visible.

Any other questions? :P

As a member of the public he intentionally manipulated for his own personal gain, I reserve the right to play around with this like a trained seal plays with a beach ball. He counted on that training and I'm not sorry if it bites him now.

The most recent thing:

Quote:

According to ESPN, Te'o sat down for a 2.5-hour interview which was recorded but not filmed. During that conversation with Schaap, Te'o said he did not learn until two days ago that Lennay Kekua did not exist.

It was then that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, who had been widely reported to be the one perpetrating the hoax, contacted Te'o to tell him he was behind it. Schaap said Te'o showed him Twitter messages between the two to support that.

Still, the "perpetrator" is being pegged as a single male who stole some pictures from an innocent girl's facebook page.

No mention of a female accomplice. No mention of the person who would have done all the real legwork of the hoax if it was in fact perpetrated against the innocent Te'o.

Only a mention of a guy who merely had to steal some pictures from facebook and start a fake twitter account.

That is the entirety of the disclosures we've gotten so far about the nuts and bolts of the hoax.

Because that's all there is.

I'm just curious whether they'll ever be able to recruit a fall girl to claim she was the girl Manti talked to for hours every day over the past year. Who was able to convincingly portray that she was in the hospital getting treatment for a car accident and cancer in turn.

That would be like a full time job. What motivation she must have had for this pointless hoax that lasted for a year. Odd that she's not the center of attention now, rather than the prankster who ran a fake twitter account.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

And people say I'm cycnical.

I've been friends with people that have been "catfished". It truly is remarkable what people will be willing to believe when they want to believe. We laugh about all of those Nigerian scams, but they wouldn't exist if they didn't work. I think this kid is going through an unbelieveable level of embarassment right now and see no reason to pile on with accusations when right now when everybody that's been publicly identified so far has said that he was duped.

Doesn't make sense? Little does.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

I can't wait until Horace finds out there are only 3 real people at tncr.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. I'm willing to take the "good kid under unbelievable stress" idea as a possibility, but it's a tough pill to swallow in this case.
This wasn't the tuba player in the school band trying to find a chick to play Magic: The Gathering with.
This is a testosterone-driven meat-grinder of an athlete who channels emotion into mechanical energy and moves people around the gridiron with it.
He's the guy who doesn't need the world to tell him his value - he thinks he's great all on his own.
None of the character profile of the hoodwinked love truck innocent kid fits with an aggressive, top ranking Heisman contender.

I also have a tough time swallowing the whole "I have the tweets to prove it."

BUT...
I'm not 100% on this yet, because he's LDS, and I've known many LDS, and they are very often humble, mild, rather innocent kids, even as star athletes.
Because of his religious beliefs, I can almost see this being true, with him as the victim.

Almost.

Not quite.
Yet.

I do not believe you fail to understand why anybody gives this a second thought.

I bet they weren't 20 year old "big man on campus" type guys who were catfished by a "woman" for a year or more who they never saw even over a video chat.

There's plausible and then there's this.

I'd believe it with IT execs - cause IT guys grew up on the outside. Very different than a 20 year old star football player. :)

And now we find out that others were conned by "Lennay Kekua". Apparantly in 2008 they tried to con a beauty queen, and there's still a running back from another team that swears she's real and is his friend.

Still not convinced, and would still bet he never had the phone conversations.

In a remarkable feat of journalistic integrity, every story is being careful to mention that the hard-copy printouts of the phone records that Te'o's associate delivered to Schaap are not independently verifiable.

As far as the flowers go, if Te'o was in on it, he'd already been going out of his way to do "look at me, interacting with my GF" stuff. He would pass his phone around the locker room and she would talk to his teammates. He would give the phone to his "spiritual advisor" and she would talk to him on several occasions. For all we know he sent flowers - to an address that, based on public records, belonged to the family of this dude he knew - so people could watch him do it.

I can't stress enough that it's already known fact that he was capable of volunteering this story about his dead GF even after the point at which he's admitted to knowing about the scam.

And I can't stress enough that the girl who virtually devoted her life to toying with him, stringing him along, capturing his genuine emotions, and dashing them on the rocks by convincing him she'd died - is, to this day, no more than an afterthought in the narrative he's backing. The guy mostly at fault, according to him and everybody else, is the guy who started the fake twitter account.

As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

So there was no female accomplice. That piece fits perfectly.

So we have a Manti Te'o who fell in love with a dude pretending to be a girl, a Te'o who realized that the "relationship" was weird enough to warrant concerns from anybody he told about it, and so who lied consistently about it when asked. Lied to the press, to his family, and to his friends about whether he'd ever met this "girl". But even given that awareness, he never pressed the issue with this "girl" he was in love with to at least show herself to him on cam for a single chat - while they were "in love" - for months.

By the way, the "phone records" were apparently spreadsheets.

Not AT&T letterhead PDFs. Excel spreadsheets.

Someone said he's a Mormon. If so, that could explain some of it. Someone said he is shy. That could explain it a little more. Mormons are expected to marry another Mormon. Choosing a mate among Mormons has always involved "networking" so to speak, with other Mormons around the country. Helps avoid an inbreeding problem, you know...

So if he's shy, maybe he has a hard time meeting girls to start with, then given the need to locate a nice little Mormon girl spurred the online thing, and once he fell for her, he was too embarrassed, and to much in denial, to accept or admit what had happened to him.
