I guess a walled village is not very effective in the times of high power explosives.
Yes and no.

First, you must have access to high powered explosives. Secondly, you must have a delivery system which allows you to place them on target.
I have a great idea. No need for explosives at all.
You build a huge wooden Donkey.
You put all your troops (bathed) in side to hide.
In a few days they will take it inside the walls.
and you can rape, ravage, and pillage to your hearts
content.
Don't need no stinking explosives.

Yes - one of my favorites, and still my "guide" for how things will likely go down if/when society collapses.

I get the idea of a walled city - I'm just surprised they aren't doing a double wall, with off-set entrances. It was one of the most successful strategies in walled castles/cities.
For one, breaching the wall only puts you in a "death compartment" where you have to breach another wall. An RPG won't do it - though several RPG hits would probably get you through both, with the last couple shots sending their molten-copper cores into whatever's on the other side of the wall.
Then you offset your gates between the first and second walls. Breaching the gate is no better than breaching the wall, as you now have to run to the side to get to the next gate. No mass of people makes it through, and this place is gearing for that sort of scenario - people on foot. Some basic anti-tank measures keep vehicles from just rolling through, and so you're really only talking about "advanced" military measures which will easily breach it - either by air, or from a distance.

It's brilliant - but it really needs that second wall.
I'd be happy to draw something up for them, and I'll leave out the drainage spout that brought Helms Deep to its knees.

KB ... I don't get your objection -- if you look at the picture in the third post in this thread, it clearly shows a double wall design, with one outer gate and one inner gate, and the gates are offset.

Their "outer wall" is really just a perimeter wall - it's far enough removed from the city's wall that I wouldn't consider it a typical "Edwardian" design, which is what they're clearly drawing inspiration from with some of the other key features of the design.

I may be picking nits...

I'd have that outer wall, even a bit further out (another 50-100 feet maybe).
My double walls would then be about 20ft. apart from one another, following the same rough lines around the city. I'd then use a design similar to the double hull in a tanker, and compartmentalize that space between the wall into sections. There could exist openings there, but they'd be mostly walled off, such that mass movement wouldn't be easy with any sort of speed around the perimeter. And yes - main gates would be off-set in a way similar to how they are in the depiction, but closer in proximity. The whole point would be to make vehicle travel impracticle through those gates - in the rendering above - assuming gates have been breached - one can simply drive through one, and around to the other. If they're off-set but much closer, this becomes very impractical due to the turning radius of the average vehicle. I'd also have turrets on the outer wall, in different intervals than they're present on the inner wall.

First off, they would never bring in a wooden donkey - wrong symbol.

Second, it should be an elephant because the symbol would be more desired.

Third, there would be more room inside and....

more trunk space....

Heh.

Actually, this place would be the last place I'd want to be during the early days of the infection. No way in also means no way out.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

If my 13 year old kids couldn't have put 10 out of 10 into the head of a silouhette target at 100 meters, I'd have been pissed.

Look at the plans again.

They have inner walls and fighting positions, the inner walls just aren't where they need to be.

Also, the way to defeat artillery and RPG's is not faux stonework, but earthen walls.

I see them - it's why I deduced that this was fashioned after an Edwardian style castle.
I'm just complaining that their "outer wall" is too far outer to be functional as a "double wall" style a-la Edwardian castles.

Agreed.
I'd actually make that outer wall very thick, with thick stone on the outside if feasible, and earthen within.

Even concrete-filled cinder blocks would be ok - if it was 15 feet between the two outer edges, and filled with earth.

You know, maybe I'll start looking into being an American Tory.

Sometimes it seems like we can't handle all this liberty we've achieved. You know that older brother who opted not to go to college or join a profession, and instead went off to "find himself"? The one who's now 45, still working at the organic foods market, spending smoke breaks talking about Moon conspiracies and the secret symbolism found on 20 dollar bills? America's like that guy sometimes.

These people mention "liberty" only about eight times on the main page of their site. And they're advocating families to start working at an arms factory behind castle walls to defend against... you know I don't believe they've made it very clear.

Maybe we should start entering into talks with England about those back taxes. Or y'know, maybe it doesn't have to go that far, maybe all we need is a Governor-General with ultimate This-Is-Bull**** Veto Power to step in and stop this kind of ridiculousness before it turns into another Waco.

I appreciate their anarcho-syndicalist leadership approach, though. Very Dennisian.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I see it becoming a tourist attraction, on the off chance it ever establishes itself.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

There is no HOA -- didn't you see the part about being able to finish your house from a shell using whatever finish/materials/whatever you want....because they believe in Liberty, Justice, and the God-Given Right to Pick Your Own Paint Color.

Course, there is that LSOA (loaded sidearm owners association). I hear they come down on people pretty hard.

I hate to say it, but reading through the terms and conditions almost sounds like they are writing a satire. "You can do what you want, as long as you do what we tell you".

I think the Lord of the Flies would be true if this were ever built.
