This is a Brown Betty, and it's supposed to be the best tea pot EVAH. I'm considering getting one, because we drink a lot of tea at our house.

Is it truly wonderful and worth getting, or will any old pot suffice?

(Careful now, don't step in the D'Oh bait.)

But what about Brown Betty? Did you meet here then, too?

I think my Betty is none of your business, and I find your fascination with whether it's brown or not to be quite offensive.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Oh oh. Reports of problems with the newer Brown Bettys. People say the insides begin to crack or craze, and some have dribbling spout issues. Problems are due to poor manufacturing.

May have to try to get a vintage Brown Betty, if I can find one.

Is this what apple brown betty is named after? I wish I had one of those.

So no problems with it when using it? Does your mom use it?

How is your mom?

Not named after the tea pot, but a worthy desire unto itself. I should make something with the few fall apples we have left, and that's a great suggestion.

Hey, Horace, you're alright. :)

I didn't have a problem with it but only used it a handful of times.

Mom is good. She got an iPad for Christmas and now has all of the same Apple products that I do. I have to keep up with her, you know.

Even the vintage Brown Bettys were really overrated. I never found them any better than most other teapots.

The newer ones are terrible. My aunt had the handle break off in her hand while she was pouring.

Brown Betty looks terrific (well, not Larry's version ;) ), but I think the most important aspect of a tea pot is that the tea tastes good.

Which means that 1) it should be easy to prepare tea in (no tea bags!), and 2) it should be easy to keep it hot.

This is a model I like:

It is heat-insulated and will keep the tea hot enough for about an hour.

Glad to hear she's doing well, MS. I wondered how the stress of the flooding would affect her, but it sounds like she came through that fine.

Aha, now we know where your technical prowess comes from: it's the mom gene!

So what brand or type of teapot do you like best? I want one that will help hold the heat well. I have a local friend who loves her Brown Betty, so I thought I'd try one.

That's one of the comments often made about the Brown Bettys, that it makes the tea taste extra good.

As for keeping it hot, the Brown Bettys are supposed to be good for that, too, at least the older ones are. To encourage heat retention, I would make (rug hook) a tea cozy for it. I'll need to buy the pot to get the accurate measurements, because they come in various sizes, as Larry well notes. :lol2:

I don't like tea that sits around in the pot too long... it gets too cold, and the tea gets oversteeped. So I prefer a smaller teapot: the tea gets consumed more quickly before it gets too old, and I don't mind if that means adding fresh hot water more frequently, as I have a Zojirushi water heater.

I use an Eclipse glass teapot I picked up for $5 in Chinatown: holds about two cups of tea.

edit: For Chinese green or oolong tea, I use a YiXing teapot.
