On the way home we stopped at a favorite drive-in in Indianapolis. Great pork tenderloins and homemade rootbeer. We went in, ordered and sat down. Shortly a young man and quite an old man came and sat down next to us. I noticed he had on a jacket that identified him as a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge - Ardennes forest. Our two groups started talking and I told him I noticed his jacket and thanked him, saying I had read about how rough they had it there. 92 years old, he ate a chili dog with jalapenos and had a cigar in his shirt pocket for later. He told a few stories about how cold it had been, avoiding the combat parts. There aren't a lot of them left. I worry a little about what happens when so few people remember that horrible a war. In any event this one seemed to be doing very well. He was sharp as a tack and getting ready to clean gutters with his grandson or great grandson who was about my daughter's age. |
