Wow! I thought clergy took a vow of poverty. Some items are as expensive as designer clothes or even more! WTF? |

ZOOOOOM!

Depends on the item as to whether or not that makes sense. We have a very cheap view of clothes these days. Underpaying is the ultimate goal but we bear no thought whatsoever to how long the stuff lasts us. In fact we just plain expect to replace our clothes frequently because we've been brainwashed into thinking that's just how things are supposed to be. Paying hundreds of dollars for an article of clothing makes total sense if it's going to last you a couple of decades, and it has nothing to do with being well off. |

Just because you are poor as a church mouse doesn't mean you have to look it. |

The appearance of religious leaders and religious buildings is VERY important. Would people still come if there was no show? Imagine holding mass in just a regular building and the leaders in regular clothes. It looses something. Special appearances are essential. I remember when Imelda Marcos was queried about the appropriateness of a poor nation spending millions on the opulent Philippine Cultural Center she replied something like, "Poor people need a dream". To me, they looked like they could use some food but Imelda never asked me. |

The vestments belong to the archdiocese and are shared and reused repeatedly before going to surplus. The hairshirt underwear however belong to the priest and is issued shortly after the induction physical and mustering in ceremony. I don't believe you'll find any of those priestly gaunchies in the Crusader Surplus site link. |

Ah! That makes sense. Aqua, I agree with your position on clothes that last for decades are definitely worth what you pay for them. I just sent two pair of late 80s vintage Allen Edmonds dress shoes in for "re-crafting" to the Allen Edmonds factory in Port Washington, WI. They came back looking like new. They will last me another 20 years or more. I also purchased a new pair of Allen Edmonds black dress shoes when I bought my new Calvin Klein suit. So yeah, I am all about spending the dough when it comes to dress clothes. Casual clothes not so much. lol Edited by Mark, Nov 21 2012, 10:27 AM.
