HOLY CARP!!!
I was kind of hoping that the Church of England would rise to the occasion but alas it's not to be for a least a while longer.

Church of England general synod votes against women bishops

I reckon its laity is just as stodgy as in the other churches.

It's only a matter of time, I think. Needing to get 66% in all three votes seems a bit excessive, although admittedly rather typical of the C of E.

The Bishops & Clergy should just tell their flock what's right and get on with it.
Every morning the soul is once again as good as new, and again one offers it to one's brothers & sisters in life.

I suspect the percentage of stodgy old Tories in the laity is a little higher than the national average.

It really is hard to believe that in this day and age, this would still be an issue. Grrrr...

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

Do you guys have any bishops? (I realize some Baptists take the title as a pastor) How does ordination work? Imposition of hands? What would the specific role mean as opposed to the folks in the pews?

The Bible does not call women to be bishops.
As if that's a valid criterion for being called to administrate an organization.

The Bible does not call women to be bishops.
Considering who the Supreme Governor of the Church of England is, another fine example of English irony.

Obviously, this title isn't mentioned in the Bible, although clearly it ought to be.

Also, the C of E allows the little ladies to be vicars, just not Bishops, so there's a disconnect.

The Times (not exactly a bastion of liberalism) says:

"What happened yesterday will be horribly familiar to leaders of political parties that have lost their way. The process was hijacked by a small but highly motivated group of fundamentalists more interested in factional organisation, textual analysis and strict orthodoxy than in the real world and how people live their lives.

Probably just before writing that paragraph, I'd guess.

Enjoy:

Religion still the main threat to Church's Credibility: As the Church’s general synod voted against the ordination of female bishops, the public agreed it was sad indeed that anyone still believed in a temperamental, invisible sky-being.

Here's a quick synopsis on women pastors:

http://www.baptist2baptist.net/printfriendly.asp?ID=58

Ordination is not done by the denomination, each congregation is autonomous. Typically, a congregation will ask a council of pastors to review a candidate for ordination. They'll look at his salvation story, his pastoral calling and what qualifications he may have. The council will give him an up or down vote and the church can choose to abide by their decision, or not.

Some other FAQ's:

http://www.sbc.net/aboutus/faqs.asp#13

My early background is in Free Methodism, not the UMC...either way, those churches do have Bishops. The UMC does have a few female Bishops, which I feel is not Biblical.
