HOLY CARP!!!

Because of the rain and dreary yucky weather, we didn't do carriage tours yesterday so I had an unexpected day off. I decided to take a stab at a real roast. Fresh roast potatoes and carrots, medium top round and my first-ever attempt at gravy. It was awesome! I mean, I could have done that for friends' parents in England and they'd be proud. It was the first thing I've cooked that I was really proud of. Especially the perfect roast potatoes. Crispy outside, fluffy awesomeness inside.

Don't have to worry about one of those creatures right now. Cooked it for myself and my roommate, although I don't think she had any of the delicious potatoes. But, yes, it's a good idea to practice on your own so when you're with someone, it will be perfect. Hehe....get it?

Sunday roast is a long standing tradition on my mother's side of the family. I've had it more times than I can count. Perhaps as a result of that, I think it's a terrible waste of good meat, only to be redeemed by finding it between two thick slices of grainy bread and covered with mustard and pepper. However, I'm sure yours was delicious, LW.

Reading your post really took me back in memory, LW. I can't guess how many times my mother put a roast into a slow oven before we left for church on Sunday so it would be ready for Sunday dinner after our arrival home. That was always a delicious meal. My mother also canned a green tomato relish that went really well with the roast beef. I have that recipe, so that's a taste I can still enjoy. Big Al |

I used a wooden board to carve the meat. How can I clean the board since it had all those meat juices on it? I can't put it in the dishwasher, right? So I'm stumped. |

On Sundays, for our family of 11 plus Gram, my mom cooked either roast beef or fried chicken, both with mashed potatoes and gravy.. about 6 times a year, ., we had to have lasagna... it was horrid... with a can of tomato sauce and a packet of lasagna powder spice. She loved it. |

just give it a good scrub with hot water and soap, wipe with a clean cloth and let it air dry. Oh, and good for you. That's a great meal to know how to do well. Edited by sue, Nov 19 2012, 09:25 AM.

Though I have a synthetic cutting board now that nothing can harm, I had a wooden one for years. I washed it for years with soap and water. Maybe twice a year I rubbed it with a cutting board oil. I only got rid of it after moving here. It was too big for this kitchen. |

Good job, LW!! A good pot roast is a wonderful thing, both for the convenience for the cook, and the enjoyment of all who dine. The leftovers are so good as sandwiches, or sliced on top of the potatoes with some gravy drizzled on top. Heats up great in the microwave for a fast and easy dinner the next night. Ya done good! |
