If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
So you would be perfectly comfortable with your son being in Sderot, right? After all, there is an iron dome. |

Arrrrgh, would you please read what I wrote, not what you want to argue about. I said that Bach was pretty safe in TA. Bach agreed. I said that people overestimate the risk of unfamiliar bad stuff happening and underestimate the risk of familiar bad stuff happening to them. That's rather well known. No "statistics man" rocket science there. The chances of being hurt, even in Sderot, are rather small. Three Israeli's have been killed by a missile so far. I wonder how many died on the roads in Israel over the past week. Got some statistics, Bach? No, I wouldn't want my son in Sderot right now. I wouldn't want to be there either. I have a choice. But I recognize that the most likely consequence of my going to Sderot wouldn't be my death. Instead, I would probably lose my sanity from being awakened ten times per night so that I could run to a shelter. That's the effect of the rockets. It destroys normal life. |

I did not start an argument, you did. I made a comment regarding the difference between the occasional and predictable tornado and the constant volley of missiles raining down on Israel. You seem to see that as some condemnation. Not sure why. |

In any event, despite the fact that the Israelis take it in stride due to near constant exposure to risk, I think that minimization of response to the risk does not equate to safety. I suspect you would much rather be in Virginia than Tel Aviv. |

If they hit Rhode Island most people in Massachusetts would be secretly quite pleased, I suspect. |

Ah, schädenfreude. Such a powerful word. Economical, too! Trust the Germans to boil an entire paragraph down to one term. |

Speaking of psychological effects, instead of heading to shelter, some people come out to watch Iron Dome at work ... Best Show in Town |

Someone representing the company who build the system was interviewed on NPR this morning, and he said that the system is 'being deified' by some of the people it protects, and it could lead to unintended consequences since there will be less pressure on Israeli politicians from the population to find a solution since they feel less threatened. |

Even in that article, it states that some people are taking fewer precautions. One of the victims of a missile strike had gone to a roof top to watch the show instead of taking shelter. The risks people take sometimes backfire ... |

one of the ironic things is that the company involved in manufacturing hoped to cash in by selling the system to other countries. no luck Not one country in the world faces the threat of short range missiles. No buyers. |

No buyers ... yet. The demonstration effect has yet to meet the budgeting process. I can see some interest in South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turk... (well, maybe not). The ones with some spare change might actually start to consider the idea. Rafael developed it, but wasn't US money involved? Would the US have to agree to any export deal? |

I imagine they would need US approval but because it's a defensive system and not offensive I doubt there would be political issues. |

If Wales ever manages to develop electrical power that doesn't rely on large numbers of stolen car batteries connected in series, the English border towns might want to think about it. |
