http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxwCYZ6Zhew

iron dome only intercepts missiles that have a trajectory to an inhabited area, and allows the others to fall in open spaces.

so far about 750 missiles shot into israel in past 4 days

iron dome has intercepted about 250

only 30 or so have fallen in cities, the other 470 or so have fallen in empty fields.

this technology is unprecedented in military history. no one has a missisle defense system in place against grads and similar ballistic missiles.

its the equivalent of hitting a moving bullet with another bullet.

Amazing.

Also amazing? 750 missiles shot at Israel. You have every right to just push the Palestinians into the sea. I don't know quite where that leads, but at some point..

Fantastic technology, here's hoping it catches 100% until your armed forces get on the job.

I was wondering why the kill % was so low. It makes sense if the grads that are clearly off course are allowed to get through. Why waste the effort. And most of the short range Qassam stuff flies in under the dome. I wonder what the kill % is for the ones whose trajectories look dangerous enough to intercept.

85-90% is the kill ratio up to now.

Not to minimize Bach's situation (and I think he knows what I mean), but TA is pretty safe. Bach's chances of getting boinked by a Fjar are probably less than yours of getting smacked with an F4 tornado. We magnify certain unusual risks while living all the time with well-known and more likely catastrophes just around the corner.

Living is Sderot is another matter. They are under the gun far more intensely.

A "senior Iranian lawmaker" has denied that Iranian-supplied Fjar-5 missiles are being fired at Israel. He says the "resistance" doesn't need these weapons (therefore they don't have them???). Let me see ... who manufactures Fjar-5 missiles. Well, there's .... hmmm, well, Iran?

I wonder how many missiles went poof when Israel "illegally" blew up that factory/depot in Khartoum a little while back.

You're the statistics guy and all that, but doesn't it matter if someone is intentionally lobbing missiles at you vs the random forces of nature that create tornadoes? :nerd:

You are unlikely to experience 800 tornadoes a week.

Mik, would you cower under your bed if you heard there was a train wreck fifty miles away? Surely the next train must be coming through your living room. :whome:

If you heard there was a killing fifty miles away (that's deliberate, more so than a train wreck!), would you sit in your locked room holding a Glock because surely the murderer was likely to bust into your house next?

I suspect not (well, I hope not!). A handful of missiles have gotten near TA. And the Iron Dome has whacked each one. The bulk of the 800 are short range rockets that can't get near TA.

You'll notice that Bach's response to the "statistics guy" post was a simple, "agree."

If I lived in Sderot, I would be really annoyed and angry. Even there the likelihood of being killed or injured is low, but the damn sirens alone would be maddening ... all night long. Life is completely disrupted. That's largely the point.

No, and I don't worry about tornadoes much when they are around either, for exactly the same reasons. But I would worry a lot more if they could form and hit at a moment's notice with no precipitating weather hundreds of times a week.

Your sarcasm is unwarranted.

TA has "experienced" a few sirens, not 800 missiles. That's all. Unnerving, yes. But people seem to be taking it all in stride, like Bach. My sarcasm, mild though it was, was directed at the hyperbole of the 800 comment. In contrast to the weather, Israel has a pretty effective shield for TA against the handful of projectiles that have thus far been lobbed in their direction. The scuds in the Iraq war were much more of a problem.
