This morning NPR ran a piece describing why protestants are no longer a majority in this country. The piece opens with the following: "For the first time in its history, the United States does not have a Protestant majority, according to a new study. One reason: The number of Americans with no religious affiliation is on the rise." Protestants are now at 48% of the population. Those with no religious affiliation are at 20% And the quote that could make you an NPR listener for life: "American voters who describe themselves as having no religion vote overwhelmingly for Democrats." Enjoy! |

Maybe not apple. If they keep coming up with quotable quotes like that last, might be worthwhile to keep them going. |

NPR and PBS will be just fine without federal funds. Why? Because those of us who enjoy what they have to offer support them - voluntarily, as it should be. Romney's got it right - the question to ask on so many of these programs is 'Is this particular program so essential that we should be borrowing money to pay for it?'. |

I'm sorry, Dan, I still don't get this. Why is this a quotable quote? Is this secret information somehow? Christian fundamentalists have very close ties to the Right and vote overwhelmingly Republican, so it completely stands to reason that those who are not as religious would go the other way. |

I have no religious affiliation and I would not be described as a Democratic voter. Not sure why this would make me want to listen to NPR although I do frequently anyway. |

The study is incorrect. Twenty years ago people answered that question differently than they do today. But today there is a new word being used to describe one's religious views - "spiritual". This word is used today to describe someone who believes in God, usually the Christian "version" of God, but who do not affiliate themselves with any particular organized religion. Many don't attend church services, some do. Secondly, Dan has misrepresented the study by cherry picking it. The study says that one third of people under 30 have no religious affiliation. Two things: 1. That means two thirds of those under 30 DO have a religious affiliation, and 2. it is the under 30 crowd that is most likely to identify their religious views as "spiritual". As much as the liberal crowd would love to see religion disappear, I'm happy to report that they are fighting a losing battle. Religion may change, but belief in God will never disappear. Lastly, it should also be pointed out that organized religion (separate from a belief in God which history proves is a natural tendency of humanity) rises and falls in cycles just like everything else, and a generation that has a low level of participation in organized religion tends to produce another generation who have an increased participation. |

I would also add that it has always been the under 30 group that has the lowest interest in organized religion, and if they live, they eventually become a part of the over 40 crowd where religion becomes more important to them. So as they say, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics..... |
