I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Ha I'll bite. What about Lipatti, Lhevinne?
Not that the ones on the list weren't great players.
And any list that doesn't contain Art Tatum is sadly blinkered.

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
No Keith Jarrett or Roy Bittan or Thelonius Monk or Bill Evans?

Those are all forgivable omissions.

The only inexcusable atrocity is the omission of the guy who play the Mario Brothers theme song blind-folded.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Perhaps they should have said greatest classical pianists but then they might have thought that redundant since this appears on Limelight "The Classical Music and Arts Website".

Greatest 20th centurt pianists, maybe. Best in history? While we may not be able to have actually heard them play, some older pianists legacies on modern day technique ar. e far more impactful than any Gould recording.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Not a bad list, with one exception: Alfred Brendel.

No. Just no. :/

I agree that Brendel's inclusion is questionable. But, no Josef Hofmann? All of the great pianists of his day considered him to be the greatest. I would probably include Ashkenazy and Argerich. Even if Liszt left no recordings he has got to be on the list!

Replace Gould, Schnabel and Gilels with Hofmann, Gieseking and Sofronitsky.

+1.

Brendull is lame.

I am also not so sure about Kempff.

What about Thalberg (thumb technique)? What about Anton Rubinstein (founded Petersburg Conservatory, among many other traits)? Busoni? Neuhaus?

Godowsky supposedly could play rings around everyone - even per Rachmaninoff - Liszt, Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart - all seemed to be considered decent pianists. I'm assuming they were to stick with folks they'd actually heard - or heard live.

Pretty bold putting in 5 pianists you've never heard and a violinist, MrNetwork. I'll raise you J.S. Bach, Pablo Casals, Heifetz and Charlie Parker.
