Duh.

Maybe they should move to Saudi Arabia and convert - in Islam you're allowed to charge more to kafir.

Interesting.

Would they object to a "senior citizen discount?" I've taken advantage of such by showing my AARP card.

How about "ladies night" at the bar?

I've purchased a car and gotten a discount when I showed my AAA card.

This guy chooses to whom he wants to give a discount, just like the merchants I've mentioned. It may be stupid, but is is illegal?

edit: the senior citizens discount is mentioned in the article

While I'm no expert, there is plenty of case law on this. Senior citizens discounts are fine, white people's discounts not so much. Jews and atheists pay more probably won't pass muster either.

Ladies night?

edit: like the auto discount I got because I was an AAA member. How's that different from being a church member?

Again I'm no expert but it seems to be legal, since its ubiquitous. To me that's much harder to justify than snrs or kids discounts. (which ultimately apply to everyone, at one point or another)

Lets see what the lawyers next door have to say.

What's ubiquitous? "Ladies night?" Not every bar has it.

What about the AAA discount? Not every auto dealer offers it.

Clearly the first is discrimination based on gender, and the second based on membership in a club.

As I said, this is a boneheaded maneuver by the restaurant, but I fail to see the fundamental difference between my experience purchasing a car and this story.

It's not super-common, but I've seen discounts for church bulletins all my life.

I didn't mean literally ubiquitous, I meant you see it often enough to surmise that it must not be considered illegal.

I too am curious about the case law - lets see if the lawyers know anything.

Ladies night?
An inaccurate term.

If going to a club in order to get hammered on cheap drinks is ladylike, then I'm a bloody princess.

Civil Rights Act of '64 apparently apples here, no mention of age or gender. (h/t Markb)

'All persons shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, and accommodations of any place of public accommodation. . . without discrimination on the ground of race, color, religion, or national origin,'" wrote Markert. She added, "As a place of 'public accommodation,' it is illegal for Lost Cajun Kitchen to discriminate, or show favoritism, on the basis of religion."

National origin, I believe.

Hey, if they're dumb enough not to want my money....after all, they're just a pale and rather sad imitation of a real Irish pub.

I'm not sure. Is 'pasty and pale' considered Caucasian?

But we really don't know what religion these people are, do we? All they have to do is provide a bulletin. I, for one, being the devout Fallen Catholic Lutheran heathen I am, have been known to walk into a church for a service, grab a bulletin, and for any number of reasons (including vomiting children, dislike for the preacher that day, pager going off), and leave.

The people who have these bulletins choose to identify themselves as part of a group - just as I did when I used my AAA membership to get a $500 discount on the purchase of a car. My car dealership is a place of public accommodation, isn't it - anyone can walk in and buy a car, but not everyone gets the discount. Why should I benefit, when others don't? Because I donate pay annual membership dues to AAA?

No mention of gender? That's really interesting considering all the hoopla we hear about male-only golf clubs and the like.

IT, I'm going to tell George you hacked his account. :)

Seriously, I suppose its logically possible that they could be muslims with church programs, but that seems unlikley.

Re the gender stuff, you do hear hoopla about male-only clubs though they don't seem to be illegal. The ERA would have changed that, one presumes.

Remember the ERA? Seems like ages ago. I guess it was.

Of course it does. However, according to the story, he doesn't say "I'll only admit Christians of a particular sect."

He says, bring a church bulletin.

The first statement is discriminatory. I fail to see how the second one is.

This is simply anti-religion. If it were discounts if you wear your Boy Scout uniform or your Moose Lodge hat no one would care.
