He's reading! Full on, reading. Sounding words out, page after page. He's been getting close for a while now, but today he read almost an entire book (the fat cat sat on the mat). i had to help him with maybe 10% of the words, but the second time he saw a word he'd get it.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I think my favorite part is when they become people, with real ideas that are independent of your influence.

My youngest is 24, and I enjoy them now the most. I consider them peers.

Stupid, frequently. But peers nonetheless.

Great job, toddler-nyc!
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Cool beans! But don't stop reading to him! To this day I enjoy reading books aloud to the family. We're getting ready to move into The Chronicles of Narnia.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Did you read the book with him before, Jon?

Kids have an amazing memory. Our 4 year old son knows a book by heart if you read it to him a few times.

He wasn't reciting or recognizing individual words from memory (which he's done for a long time now), he really did make the shift to sounding out words (especially obvious when he gets one wrong).

Here's a post from WTF with some more details.

For those interested in the topic or with a desire to spur your own kids or grandkids, I have to give a lot of credit to a newish PBS series called Word World.

http://pbskids.org/wordworld/index_flash.html

We downloaded a few episodes on the ipad for our trip to Mexico and it really pushed him over the hump. Prior to that he was a good memorizer - indeed he could correct one wrong word you read out loud in books he knew well. He also had memorized quite a few words by sight and could even spell some. But it had realy been 'just' a memorization game.

But Word World tought him, in rather short order, the technique of sounding out words letter by letter. In the series the characters build words with letters, which then morph into the object. Its really well done, I can't recommend it eoungh.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.
