Power is back on. Now I have to replace the ice cream. I ate it all for lunch, it was like ice cream soup. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

I just noticed that at the time my tree went down last night Dulles Airport measured the wind at 62 knots - that's 71 MPH - 3 MPH below a hurricane. I can see the Dulles tower out my window, I guess I'm lucky to have any trees. |

Here is the wood that I chopped up yesterday from the broken pear tree. ![]() This morning I went out and every stick was gone. Somebody thinks they hit the firewood jackpot. |

Well, that wood won't fire anything very well for a couple of months at least. |

Thank goodness. There would have been no sense in coming if the 95+ temperatures continued. Not much fun to walk the Mall in those conditions. |

HOLY CARP!!!

Out of curiosity, what is the reason for the power outages? Is the power consumption just too high, i.e., the power plants cannot produce enough energy? Or is it due to storms taking down power lines? Or something else? |

Storm damage of the high-voltage lines or of those that go to individual houses? For the latter, I have often wondered why a rich country such as the USA does not afford itself the luxury of underground power lines - even in densely populated areas I have often seen above ground power lines. |

I've wondered the same thing. I wondered it a lot last year when we had about 10 days total without power because of a hurricane and ice storm. I'm guessing that because everything is so spread out it would cost a lot more per person than it does in Europe to put everything underground due to the amount of cable that is required. On the other hand, the US can be surprisingly old fashioned in some areas - we're still stuck with a septic tank in suburban Massachusetts - I think this may be due to the way that each small town manages it's own budget which creates a lot of local resistance to big projects such as building a sewer. It's bloody ridiculous that we still have septics here, particularly in an area that's susceptible to flooding. |

Here the utility lines were put underground decades ago. It wasn't always that way. Here's lower Manhattan c. 1890.

It probably depends when the lines were installed. I assume most lines installed during the last 30-40 years are underground. Around here all ours are underground. When we lose power during a storm it is probably because lightning hits a transformer, or just causes a surge that trips a breaker somewhere. It usually comes right back on. We lost power for a few seconds twice today. I think the storm has mostly passed us now, no big deal. |
