Good work!

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Yay! Great to hear, and big props to the police. :thumb:
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Have you seen the flute yet. Can you make an assessment as to whether it was damaged or not?

The police have looked at it and to their un-expert eyes they said it seemed fine. The case was undamaged, and the flute on the interior still fit nicely and snugly into the case. We won't know for sure until we get it back.

BTW, the Cleveland NBC station is carrying the story in tonight's 11 P.M. news. They saw the newspaper article and liked the human interest angle. Funny world.

Well, good. I had a feeling they would know who to talk to.

That's fast! I bet your son is relieved to know he'll get his flute back. What an impressive bit of work by the local police. I still hope the people who did this get their due, and I hope your son's lip heals well. What an ordeal for all of your family.

We will find out toward the end of the week if they want FS back in Ohio to testify. He is reluctant, but ultimately willing.

Good work by the police. I'm glad to hear the flute has been recovered.

As the flute and whistle would not have been visible outside the backpack (I suppose), was this just a random mugging?

Yeah, that's probably what it was. The gang (or at least its ringleader) saw a momentary opportunity and acted. That frontal lobe moment probably just took on a life of its own. They wanted the pack, thinking it might have all sorts of treasures. The only thing they got was an obsolete iPod! The flute? Well, the evidence suggests that they really didn't know what to do with it, so they stashed it. I'm glad northern Ohio was completely dry while we were there.

I think it's telling that they went after PS from behind. PS is roughly 6'4" and not a rail. From the front, he might have looked like someone to leave alone.

Flute Recovered

Quote:

It was found in a hosta — a big bushy plant — near the Little Red Schoolhouse of the Oberlin Heritage Center, which is located near the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

The hosta.

And a closer look using police photos:

First, the flute case in the Hosta.

Next, the flute itself. Unfortunately, whoever opened this seems to have opened it upside down. The flute may have been shaken around a bit as well. It'll have to be checked out.
