P*D, that's awful. I'm glad your son is okay; keep up the search at pawn shops and musical instrument shops for the flute. I hope the paper picks up the story and gets a bit of traction for you.

Oh, and come back to Ohio sometime and let us make up for your shabby treatment this time.

Edit: I'm also rather amazed that your son was at the police station for 90 minutes, before being taken to the hospital, then taken back to the room, yet nobody in any position of authority thought to try to contact you? I can understand why FS wouldn't, but an assault would seem to be something that they would contact you about immediately. Speech or no speech.
LD,

The police really were worried that the leads would grow cold, so they took his statement immediately and they searched the area with him to pin down the exact spot. F*S didn't appear too damaged (and said so, vociferously). I was the one who wanted to take him to the ER for a check up anyway. But even I knew it was just a dotting of the i's kind of check up.

As far as the school administration, they learned about the assault at the same time I did. When I was done with my talk I went back to my room and found him. I immediately went back to the lobby area and found some of the school administrators. They were the ones who called the police and got the ball rolling immediately. I then went with him to the police station and to the site of the incident. Our last trip was to the ER for the "just in case" check up. The school behaved in exemplary fashion once they were told what happened.

The police have said that we may need to return to Ohio if they think they have suspects.

Oh, I wasn't speaking to campus officials, but I still believe the police should have been more pro-active in trying to reach you. Yes, FS looked to be ok, yes the trail was hot, but yes they should have had somebody at the station trying to reach you while driving FS around.

You know how they talk about witnesses seeing the same thing and having two different stories?

I think my timeline is different from LD.

1 The robbery
2 FS goes to the hotel waits for PD
3 PD arrives at hotel gets the news
4 PD with FS notifies school officials in hotel lobby
5 School officials notify police
6 PD and FS go with police to scene
7 PD and FS go to hospital

If that is a good timeline then the question of the police being pro-active doesn't apply.

Copper has the correct timeline.

Keep in mind that the Inn where we stayed was the same building where I spoke. Going from the room where I spoke to the room where FS went after the assault involved about twenty feet of travel. Finding the school officials involved going down one floor to the lobby. It all took about two minutes.

Ahhh, that explains it. I had thought that he had been attacked, the police became involved, then a trip to the hospital, then back to the inn where PD arrives soon after.

That's a distressing outcome to a college visit. I wonder if there's much friction in Oberlin between the college students and the town residents? I've encountered that elsewhere.

For what it's worth, you can search the reported crime statistics for institutions of higher education here. I can't vouch for how complete and accurate the data is.

I hope the perps are caught and your flute is recovered.

Well, the two newspapers that cover the area seem happy to write stories about the event. Maybe that will induce someone to turn in the instruments .... unless they have already become landfill.

These idiots have no idea what they took. It's either the pawn shop or possibly even selling it for the silver content.

At the end of the day, though...I'd rather replace a flute than a son.

Another thing. A lesson earned is a lesson learned. I bet something like this never happens to him again. So, maybe there is a bright side.

Well, now they do. Unfortunately, the news story took the value from the police report. I wish they had left that detail out.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
I'd imagine the police in Oberlin know exactly who the assailants are. That town is too small not to.

Agreed, Mik. The culprits will be found out, and probably sooner than later. I'm sorry that happened to you and your son, P*D. Cripes...

Well, well, things move. I just got off the phone with the police. They found the whistle in the woods, along with clothing. The backpack and the flute are still missing, but at least they know that the stuff wasn't just dumped in the dumpster. They also have some people to interview. Apparently my son's descriptions were fairly accurate.

Glad to hear things are moving along; hope everything gets accounted for and I think Frank's right; the douchebags responsible should be pretty easy to track down.

This will add some drama to the flute's already rich history.

THE CASE IS SOLVED!!

A big thanks to the Oberlin police department.

They recovered the flute.

I just got off the phone with detective in charge of the case. Based on Aidan's very accurate description of the gang, they identified one of the perps. They brought him in and ultimately he told them where the flute had been hidden ... apparently under a Hosta plant somewhere. The police even read the news story to him from the Chronicle-Telegram about the flute's significance to Aidan. He led them to it and they brought the flute back to the department. They think it's quite undamaged. The prosecutor is currently holding it as evidence. We don't know when we'll get it back, but Aidan's lip is still split, so he is not much in the mood to practice. And Aidan may be asked to go back to Oberlin to testify if there is a juvenile hearing.

The police did a lot of legwork to get this case solved so quickly. They deserve a lot of praise for their professionalism.

Awesome. Good police work! ( leave the flute at home if you visit Columbia :) )
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.
