OK, so I spent the past three days in Ohio with Flute*Son. I was speaking at Oberlin, and he toured Oberlin and Kenyon. His visit to Oberlin was really professional. They set him up with a prof in the chemistry department and that became lunch with chemistry students presenting their research. In the afternoon, he met with the Baroque flute professor at the Conservatory and they talked and played together. She actually asked him to bring instruments so they could jam. Then came biology and a dinner with students. This was an amazing and enlightening campus tour! F*S finished dinner early and decided to wander around town for a while since he didn't want to come back to the Inn just to sit in the room. I was tied up speaking until almost 10. When I finished up, I went back to the darkened room and found him lying in bed in sort of a state of shock. He had been assaulted by five or six teens during his wanderings. He strayed a couple blocks off campus, though nothing in Oberlin is really a bad district. Around 8 P.M. (still light) he walked past the group of teens. The next thing he knew he had been bashed in the head from behind. He turned and faced them and got punched and thrown to the ground. His glasses must have been smashed. We never found them anyway. The kids took his backpack and ran, leaving him on the ground. After an hour and a half at the police station, they took him to the ER just to make sure nothing serious had happened. Thankfully, other than cuts, scrapes, and lumps, he was OK. The backpack contained his professional Haynes flute and Irish whistle. That flute had belonged to his first teacher, who passed away almost two years ago. The family sold it to us, and I had it restored to its 1940s prime. It's gone now. |

Animals. I am so sorry this happened P*D. I can only imagine the pain both of you feel. I'd guess Oberlin is out, but unless I miss my guess the local LEOs in a town that size have a pretty good idea who is involved. |

Holy Crap! What a nightmare! I am so sorry to hear of this, and after such a great day, it's such a terrible ending to an otherwise awesome visit. I hope the instruments get recovered and returned to you in decent condition. Hugs to both you and your son. I feel so bad for both of you.

I hope Oberlin is NOT out. That was a really good experience for him. He learned a lot about what a good college/conservatory can offer him. The poor administration there is beside itself with embarrassment, but it's not their fault at all. Oh, and they may have a decent idea who did it. We'll see. I'm still not very hopeful that we will ever see either instrument again. |

What is this world coming to? I feel so badly for your son. I hope he's going to be okay. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis

I just sent a long email to the local newspaper in an attempt to interest them in writing a human interest story about a petty crime. If they bite, that would put the particulars about the instruments out to the public. Who knows, that might create some leads. Aidan is fine, I think. But we would really like the flute back. |

Sorry to hear that ... I would not have expected something like this to happen in the city of Oberlin. (BTW, you seem to have exposed Flute*Son's real name in post #13, not sure if that's intentional.) |

So sorry to hear about this awful incident. Glad he's ok. I don't know if flutenet.com is a legit site, but I saw this registry of stolen instruments and thought it might be of interest to you: http://www.flutenet.com/stolen.htm There seem to be several such registries, including one here: http://www.larrykrantz.com/stolen.htm Hope you get the flute back. |

I hope your son is OK. Stay with the search for the flute. At a minimum notify newspapers, tv, pawn shops and music shops. Here is a list of 8 music stores in Oberlin, send them an email. http://www.superpages.com/yellowpages/C-Music+Stores/S-OH/T-Oberlin/ Here are 40 pawn shops in Oberlin. http://www.yellowpages.com/oberlin-oh/pawn-shop |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

PD That is really horrible. Very glad your son is okay. I think the idea of getting the newspaper involved with a human interest story is a great idea. I've seen stories like that on our local TV news too. |

I will indeed be calling or emailing local shops. I think there is only one real music store in town, and they are on my list of things to do tomorrow, when they're open. I hope the newspaper gets in touch with me tomorrow once they read my email. |

Was the flute insured? While I know that won't help concerning the history and the emotional connection, if the flute isn't returned, it will need replaced. |

You know, if memory serves, Oberlin used to have a pretty decent Lacrosse team. Perhaps there's a few guys still around campus for summer courses that may be willing to take a walk around town with your son. If not, maybe the police would be willing to have an officer or two sitting with your son just inside the entrance to the HS tomorrow morning. Edit: I'm also rather amazed that your son was at the police station for 90 minutes, before being taken to the hospital, then taken back to the room, yet nobody in any position of authority thought to try to contact you? I can understand why FS wouldn't, but an assault would seem to be something that they would contact you about immediately. Speech or no speech. Edited by Luke's Dad, Jun 10 2012, 09:53 AM.
