I suspect he walks. The case always seemed weak to me. He's a schmuck, no doubt. But proving that he violated election laws, well, that's a more difficult task.

I agree, plus it seems that post-Citizens United it all would be legal anyway.

I really haven't paid that close attention, but, wasn't one of the charges about diverting campaign funds to hush-up the affair? How is that relevant wrt CU?

Didn't they get Lott on much milder charges?

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

To be honest, this one ranks right up there with the Roger Clemens trial for me. The career's over, which is all that really matters.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
The Clemens remark reminds me of a letter I read on FB today.

"If we lie to Congress, it's a felony. If Congress lies to us it's just politics.". There's a lot in that statement.

I was referring to the idea that a rich supporter can spend as much money helping a candidate as he or she wants, in any way he or she wants. Perhaps the mechanics would have had to change slightly.

But to take a hypothetical example, if Newt had had a crazy mistress problem in January, and Adelson had decided to throw money at the problem to make it go away, it would not have run afoul of campaign finance laws.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Only if that supporter does not coordinate with the candidate in any way.

Hence my point about the mechanics maybe needing to change slightly.

It encapsulates the self-importance and arrogance of people who are actually supposed to serve their people, and not the other way around.

Edwards will not be re-tried. The government was trying out a bit of the new campaign finance law, and they found out that things on paper don't always translate well to the courtroom.

As for money in politics, it is useless to try to regulate money. The key is full disclosure.

Complete, full public disclosure, within 24 hours of money receipt.

Sounds like the "sort of not guilty" verdict will stand.
