ZOOOOOM!
This is a perfect example of why independent bookstores are better than the big chains: book superstores don't have Winton.

Bookstore cats I suppose are a bit of a cliché, and no joke, I believe every indie bookstore in Sydney has one, but Winton was awesome! He hung out in the used part of the store that I'd often go to when looking for stuff for classes (the store belonged to a used book network and never charged more'n five bucks for anything second-hand, so they help you save a ton of money). He would be lying around in baskets and stuff or might decide to bump your leg while you were in the checkout line. You didn't ever have to stare at the front door to check the store's hours; you knew it was open if you saw Winton catching some rays in the window display.

Winton even had his own weekly column in the community newsletter, where he reviewed his own book favorites.

Interesting to note that the above image was taken from LonelyPlanet; it appears Winton became a bit of a celebrity at some stage.

Well the poor guy died over the weekend. :( There was a very nice obit posted on the bookstore window today.

R.I.P., Winton.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

HOLY CARP!!!
Winton looks like a LOLcat-in-waiting. Sounds like a neat cat, and an even neater idea - a "bookstore cat." I never bumped into one, but I wish I had. RIP, Winton.

Oh wow.

Winton looks like a discriminating cat with a reserved sense of self and a nuanced personality.

FWIW, I love cat marking that are asymmetrical.

I love how Winton's cheeks don't match. Humans would buy all sorts of pricey make-up to even that out, but the cat just carries it with aplomb.

Love the store kitties of the world, book stores and others. They develop great personalities, and they certainly add to my shopping experiences.
