So, I watched "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" this afternoon. No, it wasn't Citizen Kane. Hell, it wasn't a lot of movies. But, it was a good popcorn film that I thoroughly enjoyed. Good special effects too. I loved the nods to the other movies (like Charlton Heston in 'The Ten Commandments', and the comment about the 'Icarus' Mars mission). If you're looking for something challenging and intellectual, look elsewhere. If you're looking for fun, this is it. |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead

I want to see it too. Looks like good escapist fun. And it could hardly be worse than the Mark Wahlberg one in 2000 or so. |

I love that shot at the end...the awareness. |

ZOOOOOM!

Something I find very disturbing about the original Planet of the Apes, and also proof that the remakes, like most remakes, are watered down versions of the original: These are two scenes shot from Conquest of the Apes, part of the original film series. ![]() ![]() These scenes were shot on location at the UCI campus in Irvine, California. Specifically, by their Science & Tech colleges. Why of all places use this setting for the movie? Well, this was still back in the day when set design played a role in the storytelling. They're dystopian sci-fi, these movies; they're not supposed to be action flicks. In Conquest, we see how we conditioned the apes to perform slave labor, which led to their eventual revolt. Nevermind the racial implications, look at the buildings they chose for the background: they're stark, minimalist, and purely functional. No aesthetics here, this is a future that has no room for ornamentation or beauty. It's stark, cold and uninviting. The set design suggests that is what a world devoid of aesthetics looks like. Compare the set design to some sites you'd find around D.C.: ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm not saying that we're headed toward a Planet of the Apes scenario just because some D.C. buildings look the same as what's in the movie, but I do think we've adopted some of those ideas a little bit. And regarding my second point, this is a film technique that gets lost so often in modern sci-fi movies. The whole point is to make things pretty and fun to look at, no more setting as storytelling. Bright colors, bells and whistles only. This worked great for Avatar because that world was supposed to be pretty, you were supposed to think of their planet as utopian and it was designed to be appealing to you. But so many movies feature pretty backgrounds when it completely contradicts the tone and the use of setting. It's just stupid. |
