I've tried several times to figure out how to lay the background for this video, and I just can't do it. But this was a "come back" moment for Joe, and when he did, he just blew us away. Joe Cocker, one of the least recognized true musical geniuses of our generation. |

Finally

I developed a love for his music about 15 years ago - long after his heyday. I was at work, just throwing one CD after another onto my CD player (remember those?). I put on one of those "collection discs" and "Shelter Me" came on. Bill, the surgeon I was working with was doing a hernia, and he looked over the Never cared for "Up Where We Belong," however. |

Wonderful, thanks for posting that. I love the way Joe Cocker sings. The fact that he's a Yorkshireman also helps

Joe had almost ruined himself on drugs. Most people had written him off. He would literally vomit during performances. He had gotten in such bad shape people were showing up at his concerts just to see if he'd live through it. Then, he just disappeared. His live performance of this song on the Grammys, which was the first time he performed the song, was almost a spiritual experience. "I'm so glad I'm still standing here today"... listen to the words, and understand that no one in that audience knew what was coming. Seeing him able to walk on stage, simply take the microphone, and then burn the house down with that performance, and deliver the message those words delivered, was one of the greatest moments in music history, in my opinion. I was reading in the comments under the song, and someone said Joe Sample wrote the song. I don't know if that's the case, but I do know that it was someone else who pulled Joe back - a good friend of mine named Phil Driscoll. I can't say for sure, but i'd bet a dollar to a doughnut Phil wrote the words to the song. I'll post the video of Joe singing "I'm so glad I'm still standing here today", and then a video of the man who is really the one who brought Joe back. Phil Driscoll |
