HOLY CARP!!!
Why your waiter has an MD
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

If I were him I'd find work overseas.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

A. A U.S. or Canadian medical school graduate doesn't have to do a residency to practice medicine, at least not in Louisiana.

B. I've known several folks over the years who had foreign medical degrees, but could not practice in the U.S.

Requirements for foreign-trained students, down my way:

What Jolly says about needing a residency is true in Illinois as well. However, it's number 5 that gets you:

Completed a year of ACGME (MD) or AOA (DO) approved internship training in the United States or Canada

IOW, after school, you have to have at least an internship under your belt. The internship is part of the matching process as well, and usually joined to the residency. I had a year's internship before starting my training, and it was a seamless transition - I just went to a different place on July 1.

There used to be programs that offered just an internship and you were OYO to get into a residency. I don't know if they still exist.

The other thing is this: Although you can go into practice right after your internship, the hospitals that will allow you to join the staff without a residency under your belt are few and far between, at least in Chicago. That said, one can have strictly an office-based practice and refer the people that need hospitalization out. I know one guy that does that.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

In fact, theres a FP in my place that never did a residency. He's probably in his early 70s now, and he was grandfathered in when the rules changed. When my place opened in the 1950s, it was probably a pretty common scenario.

The gal I'm thinking of is my age...she was a high school science teacher who made a mid-career change back in the early 80's...
